16th Annual NBA/NWBA All-Star Wheelchair Classic
NEW ORLEANS – The NBA today announced the 20 top basketball players from the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) who will participate in the 16th annual NBA/NWBA All-Star Wheelchair Classic at NBA All-Star 2014. The East and West Wheelchair All-Stars will face off at Sprint Arena at New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7:00 p.m. CT, following the official tip-off of 2014 NBA All-Star Jam Session. NBA legends Darryl Dawkins and John Starks and WNBA stars Ruth Riley of the Atlanta Dream and Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever will participate as honorary coaches.
A tradition that began at NBA All-Star 1998, the 2014 NBA/NWBA All-Star Wheelchair Classic will feature the top athletes from NBA-affiliated NWBA teams. The players, selected by the NWBA, are divided into East and West All-Stars. Immediately following the Wheelchair Classic, NBA legend Felipe Lopez and NWBA All-Stars will also lead a basketball clinic for local youth athletes with lower limb impairments and their families.
“On behalf of the 2,700 members who make up the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, I would like to express our appreciation and excitement for having a partnership with the NBA and WNBA,” said NWBA Executive Director Randy Schubert. “We have 20 wheelchair basketball programs which are affiliated with their local NBA / NWBA team. We also are proud to be the longest standing partner with the NBA at Jam session with our annual NWBA All-Star Game, bringing together some of our best players in the U.S. and Canada.”
The National Wheelchair Basketball Association is comprised of more than 200 basketball teams within 22 conferences across the country. The NWBA was founded in 1948, and today consists of men's, women's, intercollegiate and youth teams throughout the United States and Canada.
