Of course, there wasn’t too much concern in the Cavaliers’ locker room following the loss. LeBron James logged all of eight minutes, splitting a pair of free throws for one point. That didn't help, but the Cavaliers didn't exactly help themselves – especially on the defensive end, where they allowed 61 second-half points. The Cavaliers reserves netted just 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Final score aside, there were plenty of encouraging signs for Mike Brown’s men. As he did in the Wine and Gold scrimmage three days earlier, Mo Williams gave fans a sneak-peak of what could be a souped-up version of the Cavaliers offense.
“It’s the first preseason game so the main thing was to make sure everybody got an opportunity to play and that we tried to play as hard as we could for as close to 48 minutes as possible,” said Coach Brown.
The fifth-year guard pushed the action all night, notching 12 points, four assists and three boards in his first 26 minutes in a Cavaliers uniform. Williams was 5-for-11 from the floor, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc.
“He definitely speeds up the tempo,” said LeBron. “You have to get ready and get out and run when Mo gets the ball.”
“It doesn’t take me long to find the pick-and-pop guy,” smiled the new Cavaliers point guard. “I think that Z and I will be in a lot of pick-and-roll situations.”
The sharpest player for Cleveland was the aforementioned Ilgauskas, who made the most of his 22 minutes of action – going 8-for-12 from the floor for a team-high 16 points. Big Z went out with a bang, canning all four shots he attempted in the third quarter before taking the rest of Tuesday night off.
Despite not shooting particularly well, Daniel Gibson rounded out the Cavaliers in double-figures – matching Mo Williams with 12 points on 4-for-13 shooting. Boobie was 2-for-4 from long-distance, adding three boards, three dimes and blocked shot.
Everyone in uniform saw action in the loss. The Cavaliers rookies got a decent run, especially first-rounder, J.J. Hickson. The young forward from N.C. State registered just over 21 minutes, going 3-for-6 from the field for seven points, to go with four boards and a pair of steals. Darnell Jackson played the entire fourth quarter and was 1-for-4 from the floor.
The Raptors had six players in double-figures, led by Will Solomon’s 17 points. Andrea Bargnani netted nine of his 15 points in the second half, and Kris Humphries chipped in with 14. Chris Bosh and Jermaine O’Neal – playing in his first game in a Raptors’ uniform – added 11 points apiece.
The Cavaliers head to Providence, R.I. on Friday night to take on the Boston Celtics for the first of three meetings in the month of October. The first two are exhibition contests. The third one against last season’s NBA Champs tips off the eagerly-anticipated 2008-09 season.
