Mihm, Miles Help Cavs Tip Off Read to Achieve Week

The Cleveland Cavaliers kicked off the NBA's Read to Achieve Week on Thursday, October 17th by hosting students from John D. Rockefeller Elementary School on the main court at Gund Arena. One hundred students from grades 1-5 participated in the Reading Time-Out, a read-aloud exercise where players and coaches read a favorite story to five rotating groups of children.

Carlos Boozer, Bimbo Coles, Ricky Davis, Jerry Eaves, Anthony Johnson, Chris Mihm, Keith Smart and Michael Stewart read stories while the rest of the team sat and listened with the children. Each group also held question and answer sessions to recap the story and interact with Cavs players, who sported special Read to Achieve t-shirts and Dr. Suess hats.

Mihm, a second-year forward for the Cavaliers, was recently named to the All-Star Reading Team. The Team includes players and coaches from the NBA, WNBA and NBDL as well as family members, broadcasters and celebrities such as Freddie Prinze Jr and Frankie Muniz. The All-Star Reading Team has one representative from each of the 29 NBA teams and features stars such as Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Karl Malone and Tim Duncan. The All-Star Reading Team will host different events throughout the year to reach out to local communities and encourage young people to make reading an important part of their lives.

In addition to Mihm, Cleveland Rockers players Penny Taylor and Chastity Melvin were also named to the All-Star Reading Team.

The NBA's Read to Achieve campaign is a year-round national program designed to help young people develop a lifelong love for reading and encourage adults to read and talk with children regularly. Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. The program is presented in partnership with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) and Scholastic, Inc.
