Game Quotes: Cavaliers vs. Warriors

January 29, 2013

Cavaliers Head Coach Byron Scott

(On the game tonight): “I just didn’t think that we had the energy tonight. We just didn’t play with that energy and sense of urgency for whatever reason. I thought they came out aggressive and we just seemed like we were on our heels all night long.”

(On the Warriors playing without three of their starters): “When you have that many guys out, number one, other guys are going to get an opportunity. Those guys were looking forward to having that opportunity. Number two, you have to treat it like a wounded animal that is in the corner. It has no choice. It’s going to come out fighting and if we don’t match that intensity and that effort, it’s going to be a long night and that’s basically what happened.”

(On addressing the team’s defense at halftime): “The message was pretty simple. We have to come out this second half and we have to play a lot harder than we played the first half if we’re going to have a chance to win the game…If we think in our minds that we’re going to outscore them and win and it’s going to be that type of game, then we’re in trouble. We have to defend and we just didn’t do a good job of defending tonight.”

Kyrie Irving

(On if it was tough to physically play under the weather): “Absolutely. I just wasn’t myself out there in terms of my mental focus but that’s no excuse. I don’t want to make any excuses. There were a lot of defensive lapses. I lost Klay Thompson a few times and tried to get up on Jarrett Jack but they just kicked our butts tonight.”

(On the Warriors being shorthanded tonight): “We talked about it before the game and we obviously knew how hard they were going to come out. They jumped out to an early lead and we just never got back in it.”

(On if he was trying to pace himself during the game): “I was trying to find something deep within. I just couldn’t find it; couldn’t hit a shot. That’s basically the game for me personally. I’m just feeling like crap.”

Tristan Thompson

(On the team’s lack of energy): “There was a lack of energy. Three of their main players were out tonight, but their reserve guys stepped up. We didn’t match their intensity and they hit us in the mouth.”

(On if the team let up because of Golden State’s missing players): “We knew coming into the game that with their main players out, their reserves would definitely step up. It’s about opportunity. When guys go down, guys on the bench are going to take advantage of the opportunity. That’s what they did tonight.”

Warriors Head Coach Mark Jackson

(On the game): “It was very easy to chalk one up and say we were shorthanded. We had every excuse to walk out of here with a loss. I challenged them and they stepped up to the challenge.”

(On Klay Thompson’s performance): “I knew for us to have a big night, Klay was going to have to score the basketball. He did a great job offensively. He scored. I love the fact that he rebounded.”

(On Klay Thompson defending Kyrie Irving): “He defended the best guy on the court in Kyrie Irving. I understand he wasn’t 100% but no matter what, when you step on the floor you’re alive.”

Klay Thompson

(On the Warriors’ performance without four players): “We could have just layed it down when we didn’t have four of our premier players but we had bench guys come in and do big things. It shows the depth of this team.”

(On ending the road with a win): “It’s a big momentum swing going back home to Oakland. We needed to come in here and get this win. We couldn’t go 1-3 on this trip. We are a good road team, but even better at home. ”

(On shooting 83% from the three-point line in Cleveland): “It’s a great shooting building. There’s something about Cleveland.”

David Lee

(On the team’s performance): “Everybody stepped up tonight. With a bunch of guys out, Coach said it before (the game) that we could have chosen to mail this one, last game of the road trip. Cleveland came in playing much better basketball. Instead we got a contribution from pretty much everyone who came into the game.”

(On dealing with injuries): “We are all on the same page and no matter who’s out there, we’re still going to play Warriors’ basketball and play the way the coaching staff has decided.”
