Cleveland Cavaliers ask L.A. Clippers for permission to talk to Alvin Gentry about head coach position

"CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers have asked the Los Angeles Clippers for permission to talk to associate head coach Alvin Gentry, an NBA source confirmed to The Plain Dealer Thursday morning. Reports started to surface late Wednesday night that the Cavs were interested in Gentry, but he'd been considered a likely candidate from the day Mike Brown was fired.

Gentry, who worked with Cavs general manager David Griffin in Phoenix, becomes the first confirmed candidate for the Cavs coaching vacancy, although another NBA source has said there is mutual interest between the team and Lionel Hollins. "CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two big events have already taken place leading up to the 2014 NBA Draft - the NBA Scouting Combine and the NBA Draft Lottery.

The first half of the draft order has been decided, with the Cavs holding the top pick in an exciting and talented class. Now it's up to scouts, coaches and executives to workout individual players, trying to get every piece of information before June 26.

Is Florida's Billy Donovan a candidate to coach Cleveland Cavaliers?

"CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers have contacted Florida coach Billy Donovan about their head coaching vacancy, ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst reported on Thursday afternoon.

"I have spoken to a couple NBA teams, and that's all I'm going to say," Donovan said on Thursday, according to The Associated Press. He did not specify the teams.

"It's always flattering,'' he said, "but at the same time, I've always said that I'm very happy here and like it here."
