The Cavaliers opened their season with a 98-94 win over the Brooklyn Nets at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday. Key to the Game/Key Matchup

Key to the Game

Controlling the Tempo

Under first-year head coach, Steve Clifford, Charlotte seems to have adopted a slower-paced game, and as a result, their defense has shown improvement this preseason and in their season opener.

During the 2012-13 regular season, the Cavs went 2-1 against Charlotte, outscoring the Bobcats 108.7 to 101.3 and shooting .520 from the field in the three-game series. They also averaged 26.7 assists and only 10.3 turnovers against Charlotte.

Looking to duplicate that same tempo tonight, the Wine and Gold will have to take advantage of fastbreak opportunities before Charlotte's half court defense gets set.

Key Matchup

Backcourt Battle

Dictating the tempo will be the Cavaliers backcourt consisting of starters Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters along with reserves Jarrett Jack and C.J. Miles.

In Wednesday's victory, Irving and Waiters combined to record 26 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and five steals.

Jack and Miles provided a spark off the bench in the win over the Nets. Jack tallied 12 points on 3-6 (.500) shooting from the field, three rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes while Miles chipped in 10 points on 4-6 (.667) shooting in 15 minutes.

Charlotte's backcourt provides their own fire power with starters Kemba Walker, Gerald Henderson and reserve Ben Gordon.

Walker led the Bobcats in scoring (17.7), assists (5.7) and steals (2.0), while also averaging 3.5 rebounds in 34.9 minutes during the 2012-13 Campaign. Along with Kyrie, Kemba was one of five players in the NBA who led their team in scoring, assists and steals.

Henderson provides athleticism on the wing and Gordon supplies instant offense off the bench.
