International Men of Mystery Some of the names and faces look, well, foreign to Stateside basketball fans. But nobody knew much about Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Peja Stojakovic or Manu Ginobili on draft night, either. On draft night in 1998, the Bucks shipped "Tractor" Traylor to the Mavericks for a seven-foot German named Dirk and everyone knows how that turned out. With that in mind, here are some of the top international players that might draw the Cavaliers' interest:
Thursday - School's Out Forever: High School Prospects in the Draft
Andris Biendrins (AHN-dris BE-a-drinsh) Forward - 6-11, 240 BK Skonto Riga (Latvia) Biedrins is the top international player on some boards. The 18-year-old forward has some offensive moves and is already a strong defender and shotblocker.
Marcelo Huertas Guard - 6-3, 185 Paulistano (Brazil) The Brazilian version of Steve Nash can get from coast-to-coast in a hurry. He played one year of high school in the States and speaks fluent English.
Sergey Monya (sir-GAY MON-ya) Forward - 6-8, 220 CSKA Moscow (Russia) Monya is making a late run on teams' draft boards. The 6-8 forward is said to have an NBA-ready body, excellent fundamentals and is a tenacious defender.
Tiago Splitter Forward - 6-11, 223 Tau Ceramica Vitoria (Spain) The early hype on Splitter has faded but the Nowitzki-esque forward could be better than fellow countryman, Nene.
Roko Ukic (ROW-ko OO-kich) Guard - 6-5, 183 KK Split (Croatia) Perhaps the best international name in the draft, the 22-year-old Croation point guard has drawn comparisons to San Antonio's Tony Parker with better size.
Sasha Vujacic (VOO-yah-chich) Guard - 6-7, 193 Snaidero Udine (Italy) The Slovenian combo guard has drawn rave reviews as an unselfish player with great passing skills and a deadly outside shot like his idol, the late Drazen Petrovic.
The Skinny It's hard to believe that it's been a whole year since LeBron James strolled calmly to the stage at Madison Square Garden. Replete in his white threads and wine lid, King James officially took the reigns of the Cavaliers' comeback. One year later and with renewed hope, Cleveland looks to add another piece to their playoff puzzle when they select at No. 10 in the 2004 NBA Draft. Clevelandcavaliers.com will help you get through it.
