A myriad of microphones from a myriad of countries were shoved in the young King’s grill during the media blitz that is synonymous with All-Star Friday and LeBron sliced and diced the questions – from the sublime to the absurd – like so many defenders on the court.
A maniacal reporter ambushed him right out of the gate and asked to be LeBron’s “campaign manager” for the 2007 All-Star Game – even creating a homemade campaign button for him.
“You did a great job, but it’s made of paper,” said LBJ, politely. “I think I’m going to go with somebody with a little bit more capital.”
James spent the majority of his first full day in Houston, two days before the All-Star Game, answering questions, being photographed, cutting promos and then answering more questions.
Reporters came out from around the country and a media member from Phoenix asked if the Suns are a fun team to watch. “They are when you’re not playing them,” said the precocious 21-year-old from Akron.
On Saturday night, the Chosen One will get to show off his incredible gifts in the Skills Challenge against the rugged field of Steve Nash, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul. On Friday afternoon – bouncing from a Sports Illustrated photo shoot to an NBAE photo shoot to an ESPN Radio interview to a guest spot on NBA TV – LeBron got to show off his gifts as a media icon.
When asked if he could be the first player to score 100 points in a game – a hot topic with Kobe Bryant in the house – he calmly said, “No.” When asked who could do it, he said “Kobe.” When asked why he wouldn’t, he said, “That’s not my kind of game. That’s not taking anything away from a guy scoring 100 points. I just don’t think I’m the guy who’s going to do it.”
A German reporter asked LeBron if he watches other sports besides basketball. He said he watched them all, from football to, as he said, “football Americano.” LeBron then rattled off his favorite soccer players – most of which many of the “media Americano” members – like myself, had never heard of.
Clevelanders will be happy to note that LeBron deftly fended off the questions about his leaving the North Coast for a bigger market. He doesn’t waffle or waiver in his commitment to the city and the Cavaliers and the constant pressure on him to say something about leaving.
“I get dressed every game and I put on a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform,” James said firmly when the scenario was once again posited. “I don’t care if I’m in Cleveland or on the road. I don’t listen to what people say LeBron James should do. I’ve done pretty well so far making my own decisions.”
James is representing the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers organization in Houston with class and aplomb as he always does.
On Saturday night, he’ll try to do to the competition what he did to the Celtics three days earlier. And on Sunday, the royalty from the Rubber City will try to make his mark on the 55th annual All-Star Game against the best competition in the world. He hasn’t failed in anything yet. What would make anyone think he might this weekend?
