AKRON, Ohio, June 5, 2006 – The NBA’s top young stars, along with other sports and entertainment celebrities, are coming to Akron for LeBron’s King for Kids Bikeathon on Saturday, June 24th. All-Stars Dwyane “Flash” Wade of the Miami Heat and Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards, along with 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year Chris Paul of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, are coming to Akron to ride with LeBron. Phoenix Suns’ All-Star Amare Stoudemire, Oakland Raiders’ All-Pro Randy Moss and Cleveland Browns’ Reuben Droughns and Braylon Edwards have also been invited along with the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets’ J.R. Smith, who rode last year. Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach Mike Brown along with current Cavs’ players Larry Hughes, Eric Snow, Drew Gooden, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones are expected to ride as well.

The first 3,000 registered riders ages 8 and over (youth 8-12 must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or over) will join LeBron and the NBA stars and celebrities on an eight-mile ride from downtown Akron throughout the city and back. For kids under the age of 12, there is a modified three-mile “Family Friendly Route.” The Bikeathon begins at 11 a.m. Following the ride, there will be a Community Celebration in Lock 3 park downtown, open to the public.

"We’re looking forward to a great event. The players are excited about it and we’ll have some other surprise VIP guests and celebrities coming in to join us,” said James Family Foundation executive director Chris Dennis. “The Bikeathon is all about helping kids and families and we appreciate their support."

FirstMerit Bank branches in Summit County will serve as registration outlets for the event. Any interested riders can stop in, complete a registration form and pay their fee directly at the bank. The registration cost is $25 for individuals and $75 for a family (up to six members). Once registration is complete, riders will receive a Pledge Pack, including pledge form, pledge envelope, rider waiver form and rider handbook. All registered riders will receive “King for Kids” t-shirts which must be worn to ride at the event. To receive additional prizes, a minimum of $100 in pledges must be raised. All riders are also required to wear bike helmets to participate.

The James Family Foundation will donate proceeds from the event to the Akron Area YMCA and the Akron Urban League. Registration forms are also available online at www.lebronfoundation.org.
Deadline for registration is Friday, June 16.
