F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that there are no second acts in American life. But the Cavaliers, Danny Ferry and – most importantly – Tractor Traylor don’t see it that way.
Robert “Tractor” Traylor was last seen wearing the wine and gold back in 2004-05 (and, technically, that was his second act with the club). Since then – in-between battling health and legal problems – the former Wolverine has played ball in Spain and, most recently, San Juan, where he helped the Santurce Crabbers capture the Puerto Rican National Basketball League title.
Like nearly all of the Cavaliers Summer League invitees, Tractor will be auditioning for a role on Cleveland’s regular season roster. (Only this year’s first round pick – J.J. Hickson – is a lock for Opening Night.) But he’ll be auditioning for other NBA clubs as well. Summer League is an opportunity for young players who are trying to reach the Association. And it also gives former players to get another crack at The Show.
Traylor has been solid through three games in Vegas and the former (and current) Cavalier took a moment to chat with cavs.com from the desert …
Are the Cavaliers and you like a couple that just can’t seem to break up?
Robert Traylor: Yeah, I think for some reason we’re stuck together.
Talk about how you got “reacquainted” with the Cavaliers after your time away?
Traylor: Last December, I think it was, I was headed to Puerto Rico to play. And my agent had called NBA teams and we were getting no response. So, maybe a couple of days before I was about to leave, I asked him to call Cleveland. And he and Danny had a great talk, and they brought me in to work me out. I probably wasn’t 100 percent NBA-ready at that point, so we moved on from there.
So I went to Puerto Rico to play. I was still looking for an NBA job, my agent got in touch with (Ferry). We talked some more and finally came to the conclusion that coming to mini-camp and coming to play in Summer League would be a great experience just for me to have the opportunity to play and be in front of NBA people and just get a good feel for the NBA game again.
Do you have a different perspective on things, coming back after a few years away from the NBA?
Traylor: I think my perspective is a lot different. The last time I played I was 27, 28 years old and you’re still kind of young at that time of your life – and your career – and now for me, I’m more settled down, more laid back.
I just like to be with my family and play the game of basketball. Those are the biggest things for me – being able to play and being with my family.
How do you feel, physically?
Traylor: I feel great. Just having the opportunity to be around and to get back around the NBA game has been a great experience for me.
Have the young guys been hitting you up for advice?
Traylor: A little bit. I like to be around the young guys they brought in. J.J.’s a great guy. Darnell’s a great guy. And those are great young basketball players. And any time I have a chance to offer a little knowledge or input to make them better players in the league and the community, well, it’s great that I have that opportunity.
There’s a completely new regime here in Cleveland since your last stint. How are things different?
Traylor: Well the last time I was here, Bron was a young guy and we were a team that was just tying to make the Playoffs. And this time around, we’re looking at winning a Championship. And it’s definitely different around the locker room and just the way the organization is run now.
How about the new practice facility?
Traylor: Oh, it’s beautiful. From my time in the NBA until now, it’s probably the best practice facility I’ve ever seen.
What do you feel you can bring to the Cavaliers this season?
Traylor: I think for me, I’m a great locker room guy. Good leadership. A strong inside presence in the post. Also, being physical and being a tough guy in the middle.
How do you think you’ve fared so far? Are you having fun?
Traylor: I’m feeling pretty good. For the first time in a long time, before we played that first game the other night, I was kind of nervous. And it surprised me because I’ve been playing for such a long time. But with the guys that we have, they’re very talented, I’m having fun watching them and I’m having fun playing alongside of them.
Have you been having any fun in Vegas outside of basketball?
Traylor: I’m mainly just playing a lot of basketball. My wife’s out here with me we’re just enjoying Vegas and the scenery. The biggest thing is focusing on basketball and working hard – doing the things I do on the court – and giving myself every opportunity to make the Cavaliers or another NBA team or whatever happens from this point on.
