Cavs to Participate in NBA "Week of Service"

Cavs Players, Coaches, and Staff will Volunteer Time to Give Back to Cleveland and Regional Communities that Support the Team

CLEVELAND, OH - October 19, 2009 - In conjunction with the White House’s “United We Serve” initiative, the Cleveland Cavaliers organization including players, coaches, and staff members, will participate in the NBA’s “Week of Service” October 19-23, giving back to Cleveland and regional communities that support the team. Five community service activities and events will take place from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, and Columbus to Elyria next week.

“Staying connected with our community is a very important part of our culture and philosophy, not only here in northeast Ohio and during this special “Week of Service”, but year round and all throughout Ohio. It is a privilege for us to be in a position to serve our communities and fans with these kinds of service events.” said Cavaliers majority owner, Dan Gilbert.

Cavaliers “Week of Service” events:
Monday, October 19th
To get ready for a busy week of service, Cavaliers staff members will gather to spend a day stuffing boxes, gift bags and coordinating other necessary preparations for the various appearances throughout the week.

Tuesday, October 20th
The Cavs will be in Pittsburgh to take on the Dallas Mavericks in a preseason neutral site exhibition game at the University of Pittsburgh’s Peterson Events Center on Tuesday, October 20th at 7:30 p.m. That afternoon, the Cavaliers Game Entertainment crew - the Cavalier Girls, Scream Team and Moondog - will make a special visit to Kelley Elementary School in inner-city Pittsburgh. During the two-hour visit, the students will participate in the Cavs’ Read to Achieve, Fit as a Pro, Head of the Class and All Star Kids educational programs. They’ll have fun reading, exercising, decorating pumpkins and eating a healthy lunch from Panera Bread.

Wednesday, October 21st
The Cavaliers outreach efforts continue on the road as the team travels to Columbus for an exhibition game against the Boston Celtics at the Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center. The Game Entertainment crew will prepare and serve lunch donated by Giant Eagle to 60 guests that represent the families and staff of the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus.

Thursday, October 22nd
Week of Service continues with an early Thanksgiving when Cavaliers staff members serve a holiday meal of turkey, stuffing, corn, pumpkin pie and more to 130 members of our community who are homeless on Cleveland’s Westside.

Friday, October 23rd
The final day of “Week of Service” is a double-header when the Cavaliers team up with the hunger relief organization Feed the Children to provide 400 boxes of food and personal care items to families in need at two Boys & Girls Clubs.

Cavalier players Jawad Williams and Darnell Jackson along with assistant coach Chris Jent and player development coordinator Lloyd Pierce will help unload the Feed the Children truck at the Westside Boys & Girls Club in Cleveland. Teammates J.J. Hickson and Danny Green, along with assistant coaches Melvin Hunt and Mike Malone, will lend a hand at the Boys & Girls Club of Lorain County Nordson Club.
