Cavs and PwC Making Cleveland Greener

Local high school students put their green thumbs to work to help make the lakefront even greener on Wednesday, October 19th. Students of Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s MC2 STEM High School were among those joining the Cleveland Cavaliers and PwC as part of their “Trees for Threes” program. With trees donated by The Davey Tree Expert Company, the Cavs and PwC pledged to plant one tree for every three-pointer made by the Cavs over the course of the team’s 41 regular season home games in 2015-16 – resulting in 433 total trees now being planted in Northeast Ohio. Those 433 trees will have a total economic benefit of $1,540,600 over the next 40 years.

The first 60 of those trees were planted on Wednesday at Great Lakes Science Center, where the MC2 STEM students take classes. Representatives and volunteers from the Cavs, PwC, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Western Reserve Land Conservancy and The Holden Arboretum were on-hand to help plant the new trees outside the Science Center and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The students were also entertained by members of the Scream Team and Cavalier Girls and Moondog. Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad led a program that featured Mark Ross, Lake Erie Market Managing Partner and Deals Partner, PwC US; Shelly Cayette, Cavs Vice President of Partnership Marketing and Strategy; and Dr. Kirsten Ellenbogen, CEO, Great Lakes Science Center. The speakers were also joined by Cavs Legend Campy Russell; VP of Corporate Communications & Strategic Planning, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Sandra Reid; and Cleveland Gladiators assistant coach, Dominic Jones.

One hundred additional trees were distributed to more than a dozen local organizations on Wednesday as part of a tree granting program. The groups receiving the trees include:

  • Burten, Bell, Carr Development
  • Boys and Girls Club of Greater Cleveland
  • Possibilitarian Garden
  • St. Clair Superior Development Corporation
  • City of Fairview Park
  • Hingetown
  • Ohio City Incorporated
  • Old Brooklyn Development Corporation
  • Stockyards Community Development Corporation
  • West Creek Conservancy
  • Mill Creek Watershed Partnership
  • Lakeview Cemetery
  • Tinker’s Creek
  • Tremont West Development Corporation
  • Slavic Village Development Corporation

The remainder of the trees (273) will be given out on November 12th at the Science Center’s brand-new Cleveland Clinic Dome Theatre during the showing of the movie, ‘Tiny Giants’. The tree giveaway will help spread the awareness of the need for trees in Cleveland and the knowledge of the important benefits of trees to more Clevelanders.
