AS THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS STRIVE FOR SUCCESS ON THE COURT, they remain committed to positively impacting Northeast Ohio youth in the areas of education, recreation and life skills through a comprehensive program of education initiatives and outreach efforts.

Below are a few of these education programs helping nurture and nourish such areas as reading, writing, mathematics, and nutrition along with programs that reward and reinforce scholastic and academic achievement. Read to Achieve
Presented by Time Warner Cable and
In association with Ohio CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan and Outback Steakhouse


READ TO ACHIEVE IS A YEAR-ROUND CAMPAIGN DESIGNED to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children. The program reaches thousands of elementary, middle and high school students in Northeast Ohio through reading time-outs, book drives and donations and the construction of Reading & Learning Centers. The Cavaliers are excited to bring back The Read To Achieve Challenge for the 2009-10 school year, the program is open to all elementary school students, grades K-8, in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Summit, Medina, Portage, Geauga and Lake counties. Your participating classrooms will receive progress cards for each student in the class. Students must read outside of the classroom daily and track the number of minutes they read each day for one month.

CAVALIERS INVESTMENT CHALLENGE
Presented by Fidelity Investments

The Cavaliers Investment Challenge brings financial education to high school students in Northeast Ohio. A Fidelity representative works with team of students to teach an array of financial education topics including savings, debt management and investing. Based on what they’ve learned about personal investing and through their research and evaluation of stocks, students make investment decisions through The Stock Market Game™. The teams that demonstrate passion and excellence in financial topics will have the opportunity to present to Fidelity representatives prior to a Cavaliers game at Quicken Loans Arena.

Participating high schools include Collinwood, St. Edward, Benedictine, East Technical, St. Martin de Porres, Lincoln-West, St. Ignatius, Hawken, Max S. Hayes, Black River and Crestview.


Cavaliers/Majestic Steel Scholarship Program
Presented by Majestic Steel USA

Cavaliers/Majestic Steel Scholarship Program will award six students $2,000.00 scholarships for the manufacturing programs at any one of the three local community colleges (Cuyahoga Community College, Lakeland Community College or Lorain Community College). Graduating high school seniors or college students already enrolled in the manufacturing programs at anyone of the three community colleges are eligible for the scholarships. Students need to submit a scholarship application, high school transcript (if applicable) and the 2010 FAFSA.


Cavaliers/FirstMerit Scholarship Program
Presented by FirstMerit Bank

FOR THE 18th YEAR, THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE CAVALIERS AND FIRSTMERIT will recognize and address the importance of a higher education. In 2010, 10 graduating high school seniors from Northeast Ohio will receive $2,000 scholarships through the Cavaliers/FirstMerit Scholarship program.


All-Star Kids
Presented by Cuyahoga Community College

THE ALL-STAR KIDS PROGRAM RECOGNIZES MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS in Northeast Ohio who are setting a positive example for their peers. The Cavaliers will select one student each month of the season as the All-Star Kids winner. Cavaliers Mascot Moondog and Cavaliers “Hype Man” Ahmaad Crump will make a surprise visit to each winning students’ school to present him/her with a super-sized ticket to a Cavaliers game. Head of the Class
Presented by Developers Diversified Realty

THE HEAD OF THE CLASS PROGRAM RECOGNIZES TEACHERS in Cuyahoga County for making a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside the classroom. The Cavaliers will select one teacher each month of the season as the Head of the Class winner. Cavaliers Mascot Moondog and Cavaliers “Hype Man” Ahmaad Crump will make a surprise visit to each winning teacher’s school to present him/her with a super-sized ticket to a Cavaliers game. Straight "A" All-Stars
Presented by Westfield Insurance

THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS ARE PROUD TO LAUNCH STRAIGHT A ALL-STARS, a program that rewards students for high scholastic achievement. The program is open to all elementary and middle school students, grades K-8 in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Summit, Medina, Portage, Geauga, Lake, and Ashtabula counties. Students who receive straight A’s at the end of the first and second grading periods will be entered into a contest to win two (2) tickets to a Cavaliers home game! After each grading period, the Cleveland Cavaliers will randomly select 300 entrants to receive game tickets and a t-shirt. All entrants will receive an official Straight "A" All-Stars certificate and book cover! All entries must be postmarked by Friday, November 13, 2009 for the first grading period and Friday, February 5, 2010 for the second grading period.


FIT AS A PRO
Presented by Medical Mutual

THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS FIT AS A PRO, presented by Medical Mutual, is a initiative developed by the Cleveland Cavaliers to encourage exercise and well-balanced eating among children. The program is open to all elementary and middle school students, grades K-8, in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Summit, Medina, Portage, Geauga and Lake counties. Your participating students will receive a Fit As A Pro fitness card to track their daily exercise and each classroom will receive one Fit As A Pro nutrition poster to display. Students must track the amount (in minutes) of their physical activity each day, aiming for a goal of 30-60 minutes. FULL COURT PRESS
Presented by Chancellor University!

The Cleveland Cavaliers are pleased to present Full Court Press, presented by Chancellor University! Full Court Press is designed to expose high school students to the world of journalism in professional sports. The program is open to all high school students, grades 9-12 in Northeast Ohio.

A maximum of 15 students will be selected to attend “Media Day” at Quicken Loans Arena on Sunday, March 21, 2010. Students will receive a tour of the arena, the opportunity to participate in media availability following the Cavaliers game day morning shoot-around, and a roundtable discussion with media members and public relations staff members. Students will then attend the Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons game on Sunday evening. Each student will receive two (2) game tickets.

Following “Media Day,” students will be encouraged to write an article on this experience for his/her school newspaper. One winning submission will be selected, and that student’s article will be featured on www.cavs.com.

Students interested in applying for Full Court Press must submit a short writing sample or article that appeared in his/her school newspaper. Writing samples must be submitted to the Cavaliers Community Relations office via fax at 216-420-2010 or mailed to Ryan Polosky, Full Court Press, One Center Court, Cleveland, OH 44115. All articles must be post marked by March 1, 2010.


READING & LEARNING CENTERS
In an effort to provide children in the Northeast Ohio region with better access to books and technology, the Cavaliers’ create Reading & Learning Centers in community-based organizations and schools. This allows a qualified non-profit organization to improve the condition of its current facility as well as to improve the quality of its literacy and educational programming. Qualified organizations must have strong educational/literacy programs, dedicated educational staff and volunteers and provide services for children from 5-18 years. Organizations interested in applying for funding to improve the condition of their current facility must print and submit the attached application, a 501 (c) (3) letter and the most current budget. Since 2003, the Cavaliers have opened ten Reading & Learning Centers. If you have further questions, please email cavscare@cavs.com.


NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION
In partnership with The Plain Dealer
The Cavaliers and The Plain Dealer provide teachers in Northeast Ohio with a unique approach to teaching math. While learning about the Cavaliers, students review and reinforce basic math skills by analyzing numbers connected with the game of basketball. Last season, over 400 elementary and middle school teachers were provided with a curriculum guide and delivery of The Plain Dealer at no charge for use in the classroom.
