Cavs Season of Giving Kicks off with Multiple Holiday Events
CLEVELAND, OH - November 23, 2009 - On the week that officially marks the start of the holiday season, the Cavaliers kicked off the team’s Season of Giving on Sunday with players out and about hosting events that provided for the underprivileged in the Cleveland community.
Cleveland Cavaliers center, Shaquille O’Neal, better known as Shaq-a-Claus during the holiday season, visited Toys“R”Us in Mayfield to bring toys and smiles to some of Cleveland’s neediest children during a special shopping event. The toys purchased were donated to the Toys“R”Us, Inc. campaign to benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Just hours later, four hundred local families celebrated “Shaqsgiving” at the Broadway Boys and Girls Club when Shaquille O’Neal and Feed the Children distributed a box of non-perishable food, a box of toiletries and a box of Avon products to preselected families from the Cleveland Boys and Girls Clubs.
Across town, Cavs Guard Daniel Gibson and Platinum Recording Artist Keyshia Cole gave away turkeys and a bag of groceries to 150 families at Bethany Baptist Church. The groceries included cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, carrots, cornbread mix, mashed potatoes and gravy for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The “Giving Thanks” Thanksgiving Event was supported by BJ’S Wholesale Club who also donated free 60-day memberships to parishioners.
Teammate J.J. Hickson got in on the action, too, giving away turkeys and groceries to 150 families at St. Martin de Porres Family Center. The groceries included cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, carrots, cornbread mix, mashed potatoes and gravy for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The “Helping Hands” Turkey Giveaway was supported by BJ’S Wholesale Club who also donated free 60-day memberships to Center members.
