Full-Court Press Program Covers the Cavs vs. the Kings
Student Sports Scribes Get the Royal Treatment
STORY #8: Some Enchanted Evening by Jillian Walters
IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER for nine students from high schools around Northeast Ohio, all selected based on their writing abilities to participate in the Cavaliers second Full-Court Press Program, a one-night apprenticeship of sorts for aspiring sports scribes seeking to experience the behind-the-scenes world of professional media covering NBA basketball.

Expanded from last year's three students to include this year's nine, the scribe squad arrived around 4:30 p.m. and were given a tour behind the curtain of the Cavalier organization and Quicken Loans Arena's media wing, with an emphasis on how writing talent and creativity can be channeled into various forms of audio, video and performance.

Cavaliers radio producer Scott Zurilla, who works nightly with Cavalier Voice Joe Tait, provided an insiders overview of Cavalier broadcasts. Video services director Jonny Greco and video production manager A.J. Johnson - two of the minds behind the magic that produces the various montages appearing in-game on the arena Jumbotron - gave the students a tutorial in animation effects along with the different facets of creativity tapped into and the many ways to express it. And FoxSports Ohio's play-by-play man Fred McLeod talked hoops and career paths, as well as how strong writing skills are the core of much of professional sports coverage.

An early treat happened shortly thereafter when LeBron James, upon concluding his pre-game press conference outside the locker room, nodded toward the assembled junior press pack and said, "What's up?" A moment frozen in time.

The scribe squad also lent their talents to The Optimist's "Springtime Thoughts" segment for FoxSports Ohio's Access Cavaliers. Click here to watch their work.

The Cavs, hosting the Sacramento Kings and playing without their own royalty, LeBron James, won convincingly, 124-100, in a true team victory. Our student correspondents wrote about various aspects of the game, the players and the experience and we present their words in a Full-Court Press series, beginning with a game recap by Jillian Walters of Strongsville High School.
