As Executive Vice President of Marketing Partnerships for the National Basketball Association, Mark A. Tatum oversees the NBA Marketing Partnerships and Media groups, which work with the league's extensive list of partners. Tatum maintains relationships with senior executives from the most recognizable brands in sports marketing, including Gatorade, The Coca-Cola Company, and Anheuser-Busch, to strategize about the direction of NBA-themed promotions and advertising.
Tatum has worked with long-time partners like Nike, adidas and EA SPORTS to expand their relationships with the NBA, and has been a key driver of new partnerships to the league. As a result, the 2008-09 season was one of the NBA’s best years ever in marketing partnerships activity and commitments.
Tatum is also responsible for the NBA's media sales, including sales of NBA TV, nba.com, Hoop Magazine and other NBA- controlled media. He manages the sales relationships with the league's TV partners - ABC/ESPN and TNT. In addition, Tatum is responsible for developing USA Basketball's marketing plan, sales strategy, and the overall relationship between the NBA and USAB.
During his ten-year tenure with the NBA, Tatum has held several positions including Senior Vice President, Vice President of Business Development, Senior Director and Group Manager of Marketing Properties, and Director of Marketing Partnerships.
Prior to joining the NBA in 1999, Tatum worked for Major League Baseball in their Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing Department. Tatum has also worked for The Clorox Company as a Regional Sales Manager, where he was responsible for Northeast sales. In 1997, he worked for the Pepsi-Cola Company in their sports marketing department. From 1991 to 1995, he held a number of sales management positions with Procter & Gamble.
In 2006, 2007, and 2008, he was recognized by Sports Business Journal as a Forty under 40 Award winner.
Tatum is a 1998 graduate of the Harvard Business School. While at Harvard, he was elected President of the Harvard Business School Student Association.
Tatum received a B.S. in business management and marketing from Cornell University in 1991. He recently served as Vice Chair of the Administrative Board of the Cornell University Council and is on the Cornell Department of Agricultural, Resource and Managerial Economics Advisory Board and the Athletic Alumni Advisory Board. Tatum sits on the Board of Trustees for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and serves on its Executive Committee.
Mark A. Tatum resides in New Jersey with his wife, Lisa Skeete Tatum and their two sons, Tai Aidan and Kylan Ming.
