STEVEN M. ANGEL
Senior Vice President, League Operations & Officiating
Steven Angel was named the NBA’s Senior Vice President of League Operations & Officiating in January 2008, reporting to President, League & Basketball Operations Joel Litvin. In this role, Angel serves as chief of staff, coordinating various department activities, including those in basketball and referee operations, legal, and communications, among others. He also oversees the league’s game and referee analytics, as well as its efforts to monitor wagering activity on NBA games. Angel is largely responsible for designing the league’s referee program, a comprehensive, data-driven effort to collect and analyze referee performance.
Prior to joining the league, Angel worked for Sibson Consulting, a division of the Segal Company, where he was an NBA consultant focusing primarily on the referee program. In his capacity as Senior Vice President, Angel’s clients also included high-profile organizations such as the NFL, the NHL, 3M, Corning, Merrill Lynch and Pfizer.
From 1998 to 2000, Angel was a senior consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (now part of IBM), in the government consulting division in Washington, D.C., where he assisted the federal government with the implementation of a variety of programs and policies.
Angel worked in Bulgaria from 1996 to 1998 for the nation’s largest petroleum and chemical company, Chimport, where he performed extensive financial and market analysis, among other things.
Beginning in 1992, Angel worked as a compliance officer for the Securities and Exchange Commission, running investigations of mutual funds, money managers, and investment advisors for the Investment Advisory Division.
Angel holds an M.B.A in finance and banking from New York University, and a bachelor’s in business administration from Hofstra.1/2013
