Shotblocking is an art. It helps if you have a long wing span like Keon Clark, Patrick Ewing or Dikembe Mutombo, but you must study your opponent and learn the release point of a shooter.
A number of shooters like to use the head-and-shoulder fake as a way of attempting to get their shot off against a player who is known as a shotblocker.
The bottom line is that if you have the gift of blocking shots you can alter a number of players' shots when they drive in the lane. It gives them one more reason NOT to go inside.
