Jay Triano, head coach of Canada's Men's National Basketball team, responds to your trickiest Ask JT question.
From Steven in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia:
How can a player from a very small town get recognition into the Canadian National program? I'm 16 years old, 5"8 and only 120 lbs. To coaches, does it matter what size you are?
Muggsy Bogues should be your inspiration. I am sure he was told many times that he was too small, but he ends up making it to the NBA and plays for a long time. If you can get the job done it will not matter to coaches what size you are. You have to be quick defensively and look for steals, and not get posted-up. Offensively, you need to penetrate and you will probably need range on your jumper to shoot over the taller players. Believe in yourself, because if you don't, no one will. Also remember it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Good Luck.
