Jay Triano, head coach of Canada's Senior Men's Basketball team, responds to your trickiest Ask JT question.
From Pierre in Kingston, Ontario:
Hi Jay. I coach a boys elementary school team at Amherstview Public School. If you were coaching an elementary school team what would be your main focus? How often do you feel kids this age (12-14) need to practice to improve and how long would your practices last?
The ability for these kids to learn how to pass and the importance of passing is crucial at this age. I spend lots of time shooting as well, and defence is something we are trying to identify as important at all levels. I never have practices longer than it takes to play a game. Physically we don't want to wear people down and I do whatever I can to keep the practices upbeat and fun. The players would say that I run hard practices but I want the same intensity as a game as well.
