  • Season in Review (2001-02): Jalen Rose

Head Coach Bill Cartwright on Rose:
“Jalen had a great year. Numbers-wise, this was his best year. The only concern I had with him all season was at the start of it, when I thought he came in a little out of shape. But I have to give him credit; he hung in there, never missed a practice and never missed a game. He hasn’t missed a game since he’s been here.

He’s probably our most consistent guy and his role is probably the toughest—leading us vocally and leading us on the floor. Having to score and having to help other people score before turning around and having to defend is very, very difficult. But I thought he got himself through the year and he did a good job, especially when things weren’t going so well. He stayed positive, which was just huge for our team. I would think that if you asked him, besides our record, he would say this was his best year.

Any veteran in the league will tell you that there are highs and there are lows. When things are going well, you don’t necessarily need any support. But a veteran like Jalen who has been through those highs and lows, when he sees a guy who is struggling, he’ll go over and talk to him and keep him up. That’s what our young guys, which we really had nine of this year, went through this season. Going through some of the pain and suffering makes you better as a player. Jalen was able to help some of those guys in Jay and Jamal, especially.”
