  • Season in Review (2001-02): Marcus Fizer

Head Coach Bill Cartwright on Fizer:
“What an incredible year he had after first coming in out of shape. He wasn’t prepared to play [at the start of the season], but then he made up his mind that it wasn’t the kind of player he wanted to be. From there, he really turned himself around. What an awakening that moment was for him.

Unfortunately, as you know, he got hurt [at the end of January]. I really feel like he sees it now. He understands that his role on our basketball team, in being a sixth man, could result in him being our most valuable player. I think that was a very positive thing for a young guy like him to go through. When you’re young, you want to come in and play 48 minutes and you want to score 30 points a game. But now Marcus understands what his true role is and next year we are really excited for him.”

  • Fizer's Road to Recovery:
“He’s doing fine now and his rehab is going very well," Coach Cartwright said. "If you were to see him running around and riding the bike you would think he was OK. He can move and he’s be out there shooting and jumping. I think he’s got confidence, especially after seeing Jamal go through with the same surgery and do as well as he did this year. More importantly, when you’re out, you tend to get a sense of who you really are. I think he had found that even before his injury and I’m just very optimistic about what kind of year he’ll have coming back. Our challenge for him this year is going to be for him to win the sixth man award in the league.”
