Wallace and Hinrich Named to NBA All-Defensive Second Team

    April 30, 2007 – The NBA announced today that Chicago’s Ben Wallace and Kirk Hinrich have been selected to the 2006.07 NBA All-Defensive Second Team, marking the first time since the 1997.98 season that a Bull has earned such an accolade.

    Jason Kidd (New Jersey), Tayshaun Prince (Detroit) and Kevin Garnett (Minnesota) joined the Chicago duo on the Second Team. First Team honorees were Bruce Bowen (San Antonio), Tim Duncan (San Antonio), Marcus Camby (Denver), Kobe Bryant (L.A. Lakers) and Raja Bell (Phoenix).

    In 11 NBA season’s, Wallace (6-9, 240) has now been named to the All-Defensive Team six times, including five First Team nominations (2002-06) and one Second Team recognition (2006.07). He was also named the Defensive Player of the Year four times (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006). In 2006.07, Wallace averaged 6.4 ppg, 10.7 rpg (sixth in the NBA), 2.4 apg, 2.03 bpg (10th) and 1.44 spg (17th) in 35.0 mpg. Wallace was one of three players in the NBA this season to rank in the top 20 in per game averages for rebounds, steals and blocks.

    Hinrich (6-3, 190), received the first selection of his career to the All-Defensive Team after averaging 1.25 steals per contest (26th in NBA) to go along with a career-high 16.6 ppg and 6.3 apg in 35.5 mpg.

    Chicago’s team defense finished ranked in the top 10 in the following categories: opponent field goal percentage (second, .435), turnovers forced (second, 17.4), points per game (sixth, 93.8) and three-point field goal percentage (sixth, .349).

    The last members of the Chicago Bulls on the NBA All-Defensive team were Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, both named to the First Team, during the 1997.98 NBA Championship season. Hinrich and Wallace are the ninth and 10th players in team history to be named to the league’s All-Defensive First and/or Second Teams. Others include (in chronological order): Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Norm Van Lier, Artis Gilmore, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman.

    The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.
