Summerfest’s 40th birthday celebration is over. The Bucks participation in “The Big Gig” for the 34th straight year was very successful. First, the weather was spectacular for each of our six “Bucks Experience” shows.
It is always great fun to meet Bucks fans at Summerfest. They get a chance to ask players questions, and many take part in the contests. This year, for the first time that I can remember, not one fan hit a half-court shot in our season ticket give-away. However, Mo Williams hit one and Charlie Bell hit two half-court shots for fans selected by Bango.
The first day Mo joined us at the festival, I was remembering his two game-winning shots against Indiana and Washington, and then he calmly hit a half-court shot in the wind giving a lucky fan two Ten Pack Plus packages for next season.
On our last day, Charlie Bell asked me for one more chance to award a fan, and after missing wide left a couple of times, his “request” shot swished. It was great fun.
We’ll see you next summer at the fest.
A few random thoughts:
If you haven’t already checked out Dennis Krause’s blog on bucks.com, be sure you do. He is using all the extra time he has on his hands to great advantage these days. Very interesting material.
I thought the T.J. Ford for Charlie Villanueva trade made by Larry Harris was a great move. I hate to see “The Roadrunner” leave Milwaukee because I enjoyed watching T.J. shred defenses with his speed and quickness, but Villanueva can stretch defenses in a way that is highly coveted right now in the NBA. Charlie will be one more offensive weapon, and a great complement to Andrew Bogut’s passing ability. My coaching friends in Toronto tell me they felt Villanueva’s ability is “right there” with Chris Bosh. That’s good enough for me.
As the Bucks look for a third guard, don’t forget about Scoonie Penn. I’m not suggesting he will be the guy, but remember the name. Scoonie played with Michael Redd at Ohio State, and recently took part in Milwaukee’s free agent camp. About three weeks ago, the Croatian media reported that Penn was considering an offer from the Bucks. Penn was a teammate of Milwaukee’s Damir Markota for Cibona Zagreb and help lead one of Europe’s lowest budget teams to the quarterfinal round of the championships. Even at 5-10, Scoonie is now considered one of the best point guards in Europe. Maybe he’ll be the next Charlie Bell.
The balance of power could significantly shift in the Central Division next season. Don’t be surprised if Detroit moves from top to bottom, with Chicago, Milwaukee and Cleveland jockeying for the top three spots. Indiana and the Pistons will have their work cut out for them against the three younger teams.
State Fair opens August 3rd. The Bucks will present their usual inter-active display so make sure to stop by and say hello. If you need a new logo items, that’s the place to get them.
