Everything You Need To Know About The 2014 NBA Draft Lottery

In a few weeks, there will be approximately four teams remaining in the playoffs.

This is to say, Bucks fans will be more excited about life in the NBA than fans of 26 other teams or so. That is how the night will start, anyway.

When is the draft lottery?

The draft lottery is scheduled for 7pm CT on Tuesday May 20th and will be followed by Game Two of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat.

Should you watch the draft lottery?

Yes. The draft order will be counted down from 14 to 1. Things will be tense for a while, hopefully as long as possible. The longer the Bucks are not called, the better.

Who is going to represent the Bucks at the draft lottery?

No official word on that one yet.

What are the odds that the Bucks get the #1 overall draft pick?

The lottery machine will contain 14 ping pong balls numbered one through 14, and four balls will be drawn out. There are exactly 1,001 combinations of numbers that can be drawn without respect to order (1-2-3-4 is the same as 4-3-2-1). One of those combinations is thrown out, and the remaining 1,000 are divided amongst the 14 lottery teams according to their record. The Bucks will be assigned 250 combinations, giving them a 25.0% chance of winning the top overall draft pick.

How often has the team with the best lottery odds won the #1 overall draft pick?

Since the weighted lottery system was introduced in 1990, the team with the best chance of winning the top overall draft pick has won the lottery just three times in 24 years. The last team with the worst record to win the lottery was the Magic back in 2004 (they chose Dwight Howard).

How low can the Bucks fall in the lottery?

The Bucks can fall no lower than #4 overall in the first round.

Do you have a convenient chart with all draft lottery odds?

Thought you (me) might ask.

Who are the four best players in the draft?

I do not know. Since the Bucks are guaranteed a spot in the top four however, here is my current top four.

1) Andrew Wiggins (SF – Kansas – 19 years old)
2) Jabari Parker (PF – Duke – 19 years old)
3) Joel Embiid (C – Kansas – 20 years old)
4) Dante Exum (PG – Australian Institute of Sport – 18 years old)

Do the Bucks have any other draft picks?

Yes, in addition to one of the top four overall draft picks, they also hold draft picks #31, #36, and #48.

When is the actual draft?

The actual draft will take place on June 26 at 6:00 p.m. central time in New York City on ESPN.
