Community Mission


On the court, the Milwaukee Bucks mission is to play hard and pursue victory. Off the court, the Bucks mission is to contribute to a better quality of life in Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and positively affect the lives of all people in this community.

Young people continue to admire professional athletes. And because youth are so impressionable, a considerable portion of the team's efforts are dedicated to tomorrow's leaders.

It is with dedication and determination that the organization participates in numerous charitable and philanthropic endeavors. As highly visible members of the community, the Bucks players, coaches and front office staff acknowledge and accept their unique role in society and are pledged to improve the community's welfare through their expertise, energy, effort and dollars.

Each Milwaukee Bucks player is committed to being a part of the community, away from the bright lights of the basketball court. Bucks coaches and employees share the players commitment and devotion to the programs listed below.

Community Programs


The MACC Fund Tradition
The Bucks host the Annual MACC Fund game each October, a preseason game at the Bradley Center. This event is the cornerstone of the Bucks 31-year, year-round commitment to the MACC (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) Fund. The Bucks and the MACC Fund also host a Halloween Hoopla Family Party prior to the game. Activities at the party include costume contests, games, pumpkin carving and a petting zoo. The Bucks have raised more than $1,000,000 for cancer research since the inaugural MACC Fund game in 1977, the first major event to benefit the fund. The MACC Fund supports pediatric cancer research at The Midwest Children's Cancer Center at Milwaukee Children's Hospital.

The Milwaukee Bucks played a major role in the creation of the MACC Fund in 1976. The Bucks radio announcer at that time, Eddie Doucette, had a son Brett who was diagnosed with cancer in 1974. Jon McGlocklin, "the Original Buck" was retiring from the Bucks. Jon and Eddie decided to create a fund to support research to help children like Brett who had cancer. The MACC Fund, Milwaukee Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (later changed to Midwest Athletes) was founded during a halftime ceremony of a Bucks game at the Milwaukee Arena on December 10, 1976. Brett Doucette, the MACC Fund's "first success story" is married and living in Arizona. The Bucks have sponsored an annual preseason game to benefit the MACC Fund since 1977 in addition to sponsoring numerous other fund-raising opportunities for the MACC Fund. The Bucks MACC Fund Games alone have raised over $1.2 million. Senator Kohl and the Bucks also contributed an additional $100,000 on the occasion of the MACC Fund's 10th Anniversary in 1986.

The MACC Fund supports pediatric cancer and related blood disorder research such as sickle cell disease and aplastic anemia in Wisconsin. This research impacts children throughout the United States as well as globally. The Milwaukee Bucks have been a pillar of support for the MACC Fund since its inception. The MACC Fund has contributed $28 million to research at the Medical College of Wisconsin's Midwest Children's Cancer Center as well as the University of Wisconsin's Paul Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. Long term commitments take that number to $32 million.

The six-story, 141,000 square foot MACC Fund Research Center houses the The Midwest Children's Cancer Center. This research has led to the largest number of successful non-related bone marrow transplants in the country which are done at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. This hospital was rated as the nation's ninth best children's hospital by the 2007 Child magazine. In 2005, it also boasted the best rate of success for one year after bone marrow transplant. MACC Fund support has led to some exciting advances in sickle cell disease and aplastic anemia as well becoming one of the nation's leaders. The MACC Fund Pediatric Cancer Research Wing will open in 2008 at the University of Wisconsin's Carbone Cancer Center. This 14,000 square foot wing will provide the latest in research at one of the nation's premier comprehensive cancer centers. The MACC Fund has played an important role at both Centers while helping raise the overall cure rate for childhood cancer from 20% to 80% over the past 30 years. The Bucks have played a pivotal role in this "Gift of Hope" during each of those years.

Bucks Buddies - Corporate Partners Ticket Program

The "Bucks Buddies" Corporate Season Ticket Program instituted in 2000 encourages local businesses to buy season tickets for business or charitable use. Employees at all levels have shown a true appreciation and interest in enjoying Bucks basketball. Companies are encouraged to make tickets available to employees either without charge or on a discounted basis. In many cases the Bucks will arrange for part or all of the season tickets purchased to be contributed to a youth organization or schools that participate in the Bucks Buddies Program. Bucks Buddies matches charitable organizations desiring Bucks tickets for their programming with businesses willing to donate tickets.

Several Wisconsin corporations also donated blocks of tickets to local non-profit organizations for every Bucks home game throughout the season. The Milwaukee Bucks Corporate Partners Program donated tickets to local, non-profit organizations' community service endeavors. The program was supported during the 2007-08 season by Badger Mutual Insurance, Briggs and Stratton, Columbia St. Mary's, GE Health Care, Metagraphix, Office Copying Equipment, Potawatomi Bingo Casino, Quarles and Brady, AT&T Wisconsin, Savaglia Investments and Planning, Towne Investments, and Zeppos and Associates

Sidney Moncrief Milwaukee Bucks Scholarship

The Sidney Moncrief Milwaukee Bucks Scholarship has been in existence since 1990 and was established to commemorate the retirement of Moncrief's jersey (#4) and his contributions to the Bucks franchise. The annual $1,000 scholarship, granted to a deserving inner city Milwaukee Boy Scout, is awarded based on academics, financial need, positive values, citizenship, leadership qualities and an involvement with the Milwaukee Council of Boy Scouts.

Charlie Villanueva - National Alopecia Areata Foundation

Charlie Villanueva meets with young people afflicted with Alopecia Areata in 15 different cities through out the season. He posed for pictures, signed autographs and speaks with the children about living with Alopecia Areata. Alopecia is an autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair loss. The non-life-threatening disease is relatively common and affects four million Americans.

The Milwaukee Wheelchair Bucks

The Milwaukee Wheelchair Bucks are competing in their sixth season in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). Since Joining the NWBA Five years ago, the Wheelchair Bucks have qualified and advanced to the National Championship tournament every year and won the Division I National Championship title in 2002. The Bucks provide financial and equipment support to the team.

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games

The Milwaukee Bucks were a major sponsor of the 27th National Veterans Wheelchair Games in June of 2007. Over 500 service veteran athletes visited Milwaukee from throughout the country and joined thousands of volunteers and spectators for a celebration of sports and competition. The Bucks cooperated with the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Wisconsin Paralyzed Veterans of America to make the competition the most successful ever. In addition to financial support, the Bucks Game Presentation department helped stage semi-final and championship games, assisted with publicity and promotion, and provided the Energee! Dance Team for basketball finals compeition. Bucks broadcasters Jon McGlocklin and Jim Paschke each hosted and emceed important events including the Opening Ceremonies.

Read To Achieve
Read To Achieve is a year-round program, initiated by the NBA and its member teams, that is designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading. The program reaches an estimated 50 million children per year. It is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. In addition to a $100 million-per-year promotional campaign, the effort includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs.

Integral components of the program include national and local All-Star Reading Teams (comprised of current and former NBA and WNBA players and other members of the NBA family who promote reading efforts through in-arena events), Public Service Announcements and community appearances throughout the year.

Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge
The Milwaukee Bucks, The Northwestern Mutual Foundation and the Milwaukee County Federated Library System have partnered to execute the "Milwaukee Bucks Library Reading Challenge". The reading challenge is open to all Wisconsin young-adults in the 3rd - 10th grades. The purpose of the reading program is to promote literacy and library usage by youth in Milwaukee and statewide communities ... "The more you read, the more you win!" With each page read, the students score points. When a predetermined number of points are achieved, students become eligible to receive a variety of prizes, including Bucks game tickets and a chance to win a Bucks autographed basketball. Second Harvest of Wisconsin PBJ Challenge
Bucks guard Charlie Bell was the spokesperson for the 2006 Peanut and Butter challenge where local schools were challenged to raise as much PBJ as possible. The top schools were recognized on court during a Milwaukee Bucks Home Game. 20 tons of Peanut Butter and Jelly was raised in total. The Bucks have launched the 2007 PB&J campaign as well.

Bucks One-On-One Corner presented by Columbia St. Mary's
Each season, the Bucks Columbia St. Mary's present a special opportunity for fans to meet players and coaches prior to selected home games. Fans can personally meet a Bucks player, coach or Bango for autographs, photos or handshakes. Sessions are held on selected home game nights.

Milwaukee Bucks Reading & Learning Center
In 2003, the Milwaukee Bucks opened their first Read to Achieve Reading and Learning Center at the United Community Center. A joint initiative with Time Warner Cable and TNT Television, the Reading and Learning Center program was designed to motivate kids to read not just books but online as well. The mission is to provide each student with opportunities to expand their horizons, achieve greater academic success and improve self-esteem by encouraging reading in any format. Participants are awarded prizes throughout the year for their reading achievements. Reading and learning centers are equipped with computers, workstations, reference libraries and study materials.

Salute To Scouts Night
Beginning in 1984, the Bucks have saluted Boy & Girl Scouts throughout the state of Wisconsin at a Bucks game with a special commemorative patch and on-court recognition. More than 100,000 scouts, along with family members and friends, have attended Salute To Scouts Nights since its inception.

Holiday Food Baskets For The Needy
A Bucks player has traditionally distributed holiday food baskets to families in Milwaukee each year at Thanksgiving time. The food is purchased by the player and distributed with the help of local agencies.

Children's Hospital Of Wisconsin Player Visit
Each holiday season, Bucks players, coaches and front office staff partner with Women for Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer and visit Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Bucks personalities deliver toys and spread holiday cheer to children in the hospital and at the center.

Bucks Wives Save Lives
The wives of Milwaukee Bucks players, coaches and front office personnel join the Milwaukee Breast Cancer Awareness Program to host a silent auction of NBA memorabilia during each season. The auction proceeds have totaled more than $200,000 in the twelve years of the program. The Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program is a program of the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Since its inception in 1990, the program has provided breast cancer screening to uninsured and underinsured women in the city of Milwaukee, and has outfitted a new mobile diagnosis facility.

Lady Bucks - Formula Fastbreak
The significant others of Bucks players and coaches raised over $15,000 and 376 lbs of infant formula as a part of the first Formula Fastbreak initiative. All money and formula raised will benefit mothers and their infants throughout the state of Wisconsin by the way of Hunger Taskforce of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee Bucks In-game Community Auction presented by Boston Store
The Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Store raised over $13,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee with five in-game silent auctions of NBA memorabilia thought out the 2006-07 season. The Bucks will continue the charitable program with Boston Store in 2007-08.

PCC/Bucks Golf Tournament For Cystic Fibrosis
The Bucks and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation co-host the annual PCC/Milwaukee Bucks Golf Tournament in September of each year. Golfers from the Milwaukee and Northern Illinois corporate communities and their guests attend. The tournament offers the opportunity to golf with Bucks coaches and players. Bucks Vice President of Business Operations John Steinmiller serves as honorary Chairman and hosts the tournament, which celebrated its 16th anniversary in September of 2006. The event has raised nearly $800,000 to support the foundation.

Salvation Army
The Milwaukee Bucks staff helps to prepare 3,000 bag lunches to kick off the annual feed the Kids Summer Lunch Program. Players, coaches and staff volunteer their time to ring bells to raise money for the Salvation Army's annual holiday giving campaign.

Snuggle Up and Read
In conjunction with Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation, Bucks players host several reading sessions throughout the season at area schools and agencies. Every child in attendance is provided with a new book.

Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation Book Giveaway
Over 1,400 Milwaukee Public School children come to the Bradley Center to have Bucks players, coaches and Bango read and discuss books with them on the Bucks Court. Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation assists in providing the children with a new book to take home with them.

Bucks Players School Supply Distribution
Each September, Milwaukee Bucks players visit three Milwaukee area schools. They speak to classrooms at each school about the importance of education and hand out school supplies, while leaving enough supplies for the entire school. To date, 14,000 sets of school supplies have been distributed to MPS students.

St. Coletta's Fundraiser
Since 1978, the Milwaukee Bucks has been a strong supporter of the St. Coletta School for the Mentally Handicapped. St. Coletta's is an outstanding facility that provides education, love and meaningful work situations to both adults and children. For the past 28 years, St. Coletta's has built a fundraising event around a Bucks game through which the school will benefit from a quantity of tickets sold to their guests. Following the game, the school holds a reception and dinner where the entire Bucks team participates in a meet and greet session.

YMCA Youth Basketball
The Bucks host a YMCA youth basketball clinic each season for players ages 4-12. The event is held at the Milwaukee Bucks Training Center (located in St. Francis, WI) and features Bucks players and coaches. The Bucks provide annual funding to support the YMCA basketball leagues throughout the Milwaukee area and are recognized as a presenting sponsor of the program.

Jr. NBA & Jr. WNBA
Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA, together with Gatorade and Nike, provide support programs at no cost to qualified recreational youth basketball leagues serving boys and girls from 5-14 years of age. The centerpiece of the Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA program is a comprehensive and integrated youth basketball curriculum for players, parents and coaches, designed to cover on- and off-the-court topics.

Milwaukee Bucks Prep Series
The Bucks provide a rare opportunity for boys and girls Wisconsin High School basketball teams to play a regular season game on the Bradley Center floor prior to a Bucks game. Proceeds from ticket sales can be used as a fundraising opportunity for each participating school. For information on getting involved, contact Steve Tarachow at (414) 227-0539.

Milwaukee Bucks-MGD Three
The Bucks and Miller Brewing Company donate $50 to the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC Fund) each season for three-point baskets made by the Milwaukee Bucks. This season will mark Miller's 36th year as a participant in Bucks basketball on WTMJ Radio as a prime network sponsor.

Fire Safety Program
The Bucks have joined the Milwaukee Fire Department to film Public Service Announcements promoting fire safety. The annual program is designed to teach kids and their parents the importance of fire safety and what to do in case of an emergency. The PSA runs locally on cable and broadcast television. The Milwaukee Bucks also honor fire safety poster contest winners at a halftime ceremony commemorating fire prevention week.

Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation "Bring a Book Home" event
Over 1,000 Milwaukee Public School children come to the Milwaukee Art Museum to have Bucks players, coaches and Bango read and discuss books with the kids in the art museum galleries. 10,000 books are donated to the schools and the children. Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation assists in providing the children with a new book to take home with them

Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation and Kids Matter Inc. Courthouse Library
The Milwaukee Bucks, Sam's Hope Literacy Foundation and Kids Matter Inc a foster care advocate dedicated the first Courthouse Library. The goal is to give every child a chance to read.

Annual Milwaukee Bucks/Blood Center Of Southeastern Wisconsin Blood Drive
This season the Milwaukee Bucks will host their 6th Annual Blood Drive in cooperation with WTMJ Radio and The Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin. The drive helps fill the endless need for blood to hospitals in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Washington, Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties. Bucks partners in the event include The Bradley Center, the City of Milwaukee and GE Healthcare. The Blood Drive is a full 12-hour event at The Bradley Center, which features appearances by Milwaukee Bucks coaches and players, Bango, The Energee! Dance Team and Bucks radio and television personalities. Over 300 Bucks fan donors have participated each year, making the Bucks Blood Drive one of the largest single day events held by the Bradley Center.

Southeastern Wisconsin Special Olympics
The Bucks have a strong commitment to Special Olympics in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Bucks host an annual Special Olympic Basketball clinic each season. Bucks players and coaches teach campers basketball fundamentals. During each season, the Bucks host a Special Olympics Night in which All-Star players from local Special Olympics leagues are featured at halftime of a Bucks game in a special basketball exhibition.

Festival Visits
Bucks players and front office staff make visits to area festivals during the summer months. Players participate in games, interactive activities and sign autographs, while staff members distribute giveaway items and ticket information. Visits this past summer included Juneteeth Day, African World Fest, Summerfest and the Wisconsin State Fair.

D.A.R.E. Night
The Bucks honor students participating in their local D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) programs at a Bucks game. All southeastern Wisconsin D.A.R.E. members receive a complimentary ticket to a Milwaukee Bucks home game for making the commitment to the D.A.R.E. program and for staying drug-free.

Bango's Brushin' Buddies Program
Brushing twice a day might not turn kids into NBA players, but it can get them into an NBA game! Children (ages 5-16) from around the state pledged to be one of Bango's Brushin' Buddies in a partnership between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Wisconsin Dental Association (WDA) for the 2006-07 NBA season. Several hundred participating children statewide signed a pledge card which had the child promise to brush at least twice a day, floss every day and visit his/her WDA dentist twice a year. In return, the dentist provided the child a buy one-get one free ticket voucher for a Milwaukee Bucks game.

American Heart Association - Jump Rope for Heart / Hoops for Heart
The Bucks pair up with the American Heart Association and recognize top fundraisers at participating schools in Wisconsin in the annual Jump Rope for Heart & Hoops for Heart fundraising campaign. Top students receive a complimentary ticket to a Milwaukee Bucks home game and are invited to a pre-game on court experience.

Kids Night Out
Each April, the Milwaukee Bucks will be hosting underprivileged children's charities across the Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin region for the Annual Kids Night Out. This is an opportunity for companies and individuals to join us in sponsoring local youth to attend a Bucks game at the Bradley Center. For many children, the opportunity to attend a professional sporting event will be a unique treat that will provide lasting memories.

Milwaukee Bucks Black History Month Visits
Bucks players and coaches commemorate Black History Month by sharing experiences with students at Milwaukee Public Elementary Schools throughout the month. A question and answer session follows and students and teachers ask questions on topics from basketball to education. Bucks Players also visited local senior centers.

Milwaukee Bucks Internship Program
The Milwaukee Bucks conduct several internship programs throughout the season designed to provide college students exposure to the non-basketball functions within professional sports. Internship opportunities are available in the following departments: business operations; community relations; finance; game operations; public relations; sales and marketing; television development; and ticketing.

Summerfest/Wisconsin State Fair
Bucks players make appearances on several occasions throughout the run of Summerfest. They take part in a one-hour interactive show and sign autographs. Both events feature a Bucks merchandise sales booth, offering a variety of Bucks paraphernalia for all ages.

Bango Appearances
The Bucks mascot Bango makes appearances all over the state of Wisconsin at area camps, parades, library reading events, fundraisers and festivals throughout the year. He joins in activities, distributes prizes, takes pictures and signs autographs during his one-hour visit.
