EQUIPE DA BRASILEIRA IZIANE GANHA A PRIMEIRA ESCOLHA NO DRAFT DA WNBA EM 2004



A equipe da brasileira Iziane Castro Marques, Phoenix Mercury, ganha a terceira loteria anual do Draft da WNBA, ganhando assim a primeira escolha no recrutamento da WNBA em 2004. O Draft acontecerá em abril de 2004.

Phoenix teve 410 chances de 1,001 para receber a primeira escolha em geral. O Washington Mystics, onde joga a brasileira Helen Luz, terá a segunda escolha no Draft seguido pelo Indiana Fever, o San Antonio Silver Stars, o New York Liberty e o Seattle Storm.

A loteria do Draft foi conduzida por oficiais da WNBA e representantes da firma de contabilidade de Ernst & Young nos estúdios da NBA Entertainment em Secaucus, N.J. e incluiu as seis equipes que não qualificaram para os Playoffs da WNBA em 2003. A loteria estabeleceu a ordem de seleção para o primeiro turno do Draft, com a ordem de seleção durante o segundo e o terceiro turno baseado na pontuação das equipes durante a temporada regular da WNBA em 2003.

O Brasil tem sido tradicionalmente uma cesta de talentos para o basquete feminino. A temporada regular da WNBA de 2003 destacou três jogadoras brasileiras: Janeth Arcain (Houston Comets), Hélen Luz (Washington Mystics) e Iziane Castro Marques (Phoenix Mercury). Na temporada anterior além destas três jogadoras brasileiras, outras atletas brasileiras eram a Kelly Santos do Detroit Shock, Ericka de Souza do LA Sparks, Claudia Neves do Miami Sol, Cintia dos Santos do Orlando Miracle e Adriana Moisés do Phoenix Mercury.
