O Atlanta Hawks libera o jogador Gary Payton de acordo ao anuncio do Billy Knight, Gerente Geral e Vice-presidente dos Hawks. O Payton foi adquirido no dia 24 de fevereiro em uma operação de transferência de jogadores com o Boston Celtics. Atlanta recebeu o Payton, o Tom Gugliotta, o Michael Stewart e um turno da primeira rodada no NBA Draft em troca do Antoine Walker.

Apelidado ‘The Glove’ (‘A Luva’), o Payton tem sido escolhido para a Equipe Ideal Defensiva por oito temporadas consecutivas (1994-2001) e foi nomeado “Defesa do Ano” em 1996, se convertendo no primeiro armador a ganhar este prêmio desde que o Michael Jordan o obteve na temporada de 1987-88.

Conhecido pela sua tenacidade e atitude ganhadora, o ex-jogador dos Celtics tem ganhado duas vezes a medalha de Ouro nos Jogos Olímpicos de Atlanta (1996) e de Sydney (2000). Ele integrou a Equipe Ideal de 1998 e 2000, e para a Segunda Equipe Ideal em 1995, 1996, 1997 e 1999.

Antes de se unir aos Lakers como agente livre no dia 16 de julho de 2003, o Payton disputou 28 jogos com o Milwaukee Bucks depois de ser transferido pelo Supersonics Seattle no dia 20 de fevereiro de 2003.

Ele foi escolhido por Seattle na primeira rodada (segundo turno) do NBA Draft de 1990. Em 13 anos com o Seattle, ele participou em sete edições do Jogo das Estrelas (1994-98 e 2000-01) e foi titular em 1997 e 1998.

Depois de terminar o seu contrato com os Hawks, o Payton fica liberado para assinar um contrato com qualquer equipe da liga.
