O basquetebol é reconhecido como um dos esportes mais populares do Brasil, em parte ao êxito histórico de suas equipes nacionais feminina e masculina, e as realizações do lendário ala Oscar Schmidt. Como um resultado, a NBA e WNBA são talvez as ligas internacionais de esportes mais conhecidas neste país vasto de 174.5 milhões de pessoas. Mas a NBA não só um sucesso no Brasil, e sim um grande sucesso no mundo inteiro.

Esta liga começou com 11 times em 1946. A liga era chamada de Basketball Association of America (BAA), ou em português, Associação de Basquetebol da América. Originalmente abrangia 11 equipes em duas divisões: Boston Celtics, Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, New York Knickerbockers, Philadelphia Warriors, Pittsburgh Ironmen, Providence Steamrollers, St Louis Bombers, Toronto and Washington Capitols.

Naqueles tempos o basquetebol profissional ainda não era muito popular; então na segunda temporada, em 1947, parecia certo o fracasso da liga. Enquanto quatro equipes resolveram sair (Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, Pittsburgh Ironmen and Toronto Huskies - 8 times, 2 divisões) e os jogos foram reduzidos de 60 para 48 jogos, o Baltimore Bullets uniu-se a BAA.

Em 1948, quatro outras equipes estabelecerão a Liga Nacional de Basquetebol (National Basketball League -NBL) e se uniram a BAA: Ft Wayne Pistons, Indianapolis Jets, Minneapolis Lakers and Rochester Royals (12 e 2 divisões).

Em 1949, os outros seis times do NBL—Anderson (IN) Packers, Denver Nuggets, Indianapolis Olympians, Sheboygan (WI) Redskins, Syracuse Nationals, Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Waterloo (IA) Hawks—uniram-se com os novos Indianapolis Olympians. Foi então que a BAA tornou-se a Associação Nacional de Basquetebol (National Basketball Association - NBA) com 17 equipes e 3 divisões.

No começo dos anos 50s, alguns times começaram a se retirar da liga. Em 1954, a liga chegou a ter só 8 equipes e 2 divisões. Quando tudo parecia acabado, surgiu um pivô de 2 metros e 5 centímetros que revolucionou a liga. O nome deste era George Mikan e ele tinha uma média de 23,8 pontos por partida. Ganhou 5 títulos com o Minneapoles Lakers e os craques começaram a aparecer na década de 50 como Boby Cousy e Paul Arizin. O ídolo esperado pela mídia não demorou para aparecer.

Em 56, surge um dos maiores atletas de todos os tempos, o pivô Bill Russell. Em 59 e 66 aparecem mais duas feras Elgin Baylor e o pivô Wilt Chamberlain. Em e de março de 62, um feito inédito. A assustadora marca de 100 pontos do fantástico Wilt Chamberlain.

Desde então adiante, a liga passou por outras mudanças importantes, mas em 1995 os Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies uniram-se a NBA como equipes de expansão e fizeram a liga ter 29 equipes e 4 divisões como vemos hoje.

No dia de hoje a NBA está em alta por causa de novas super estrelas como Shaq O'neal, Kobe Braynt, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd e entre outras. E com estrelas internacionais tais como Nenê Hilário ou Yao Ming, a NBA está se tornando um fenômeno internacional.

      Corey Maggette misses the layup but Bismack Biyombo is there to put it back in with the two-handed dunk.

    • Williams' Threads the Needle

      Deron Williams leads the break and delivers a gorgeous pass to Johan Petro, who finishes big.

    • Long Distance Assist

      Andre Miller throws the alley-oop to Kenneth Faried from behind the half-court stripe.
