A NBA anunciou que o Elton Brand (Los Angeles Lakers) recebeu o troféu Joe Dumars de Compañerismo na temporada de 2005-06.

Originalmente apresentado no final da temporada de 1995-96, este prêmio premia o jogador que melhor representa os ideais de companheirismo na quadra: comportamento ético, jogo limpo e integridade. O troféu foi batizado em honra do Joe Dumars (ex-jogador dos Pistons e hoje gerente de operações do Detroit), ganhador do primeiro prêmio.

O Brand, quem participou no Jogo das Estrelas de 2006, foi o líder anotador dos Clippers na temporada regular e foi um dos seis ganhadores divisionais deste prêmio: Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls), Yao Ming (Houston Rockets), Shaquille O’Neal (Miami Heat), Jacque Vaugh (New Jersey Nets) e Andrei Kirilenko (Utah Jazz).

A NBA doará 25 mil dólares em nome da fundação C.A.M.P. do Elton Brand em Peekskill (New York), qual funciona como um centro de leitura. A NBA doará também 10 mil dólares a cada uma das fundações dos outro ganhadores divisionais deste modo:

Yao: Olimpíadas Especiais do Texas
O’Neal: Fundação The Odessa Chambliss
Vaughn: Organização ‘Irmãos Maiores’ do Condado de Douglas (Lawrence, Kansas)
Kirilenko: Instituto de Câncer Huntsman em Sal Lake City

Este ano marca a segunda ocasião na qual este prêmio é entregue por votação. Os nomeados receberam onze pontos por cada primeiro lugar, nove pontos por cada segundo lugar, sete por cada terceiro e um ponto por cada quarta posição. Cada equipe nomeou um candidato e os ex-jogadores John Crotty, John Celestand, Eddie Johnson, Steve Mix e Kenny Smith foram os encarregados de selecionar os seis ganhadores em cada divisão.
