O Turiaf, quem foi escolhido na segunda rodada do NBA Draft 2005 no turno 37, foi diagnosticado com um problema em sua veia aorta que o obrigava a se submeter a uma cirurgia para evitar problemas adicionais. A operação aconteceu no dia 26 de julho do ano passado.

O Turiaf, nascido em Martinica e criado na França, voltou a jogar basquete profissionalmente com os Yakama Sun Kings do Continental Basketball Association (CBA), onde teve médias de 13.0 pontos e 6.3 rebotes em nove jogos.

O jovem ala/pivô de 23 anos afirmou em uma coletiva de imprensa: "Os fãs poderiam ter dúvidas a respeito de se eu poderia ou não voltar ao basquete depois de uma cirurgia de coração aberto, mas eles não têm motivos para estarem preocupados. Eu me sinto muito bem e não corro nenhum risco".

Antes da cirurgia, o Turiaf integrou a equipe dos Lakers na Liga de Verão de Long Beach, onde obteve médias de 14.0 pontos e 4.7 rebotes em 21.9 minutos.
