O Portland Trail Blazers anuncia a liberação do técnico Maurice Cheeks de suas funções. Em seu lugar tem sido encarregado como técnico interino o Kevin Pritchard, Diretor do Departamento de Jogadores.

“Temos realizado esta mudança com a intenção de avaliar toda a equipe e de deixar a franquia na melhor posição para o próximo NBA Draft e para a contratação de agentes livres”, comentou o John Nash, Gerente Geral dos Trail Blazers.

“Agradecemos todo o esforço do Maurice durante esta difícil época e lhe desejamos o melhor no futuro”.

O Pritchard, de 37 anos de idade, cumpre o seu primeiro ano na equipe. Anteriormente ele havia trabalhado durante um ano e meio como olheiro para o San Antonio Spurs. Previamente, ele estava vinculado com os Kansas City Knights da ABA como gerente, técnico e diretor de jogadores. Na temporada de 2001-02, ele guiou a equipe ao título da ABA.

Como jogador, ele foi escolhido pelo Golden State Warriors (turno 34) no NBA Draft de 1990. Ele jogou para Boston, Philadelphia, Miami e Washington, e também esteve na Espanha, Itália e Alemanha.

O Cheeks foi nomeado o décimo técnico na história dos Trail Blazers no dia 27 de junho de 2001, depois de ser assistente técnico durante sete temporadas em Philadelphia. Os seus 162 triunfos com o Trail Blazers o deixam como o técnico mais ganhador na história da equipe. Em um pouco mais de três temporadas, ele guiou a equipe em duas participações durante os NBA Playoffs. Na temporada de 2002-03, a sua equipe finalizou em segundo lugar da Divisão do Pacífico com um recorde de 50 triunfos e 32 derrotas.

A equipe de assistentes técnicos se manterá e continuará trabalhando com o Pritchard.
