The Charlotte Bobcats Lady Cats, Rufus and Cats Crew members traveled to Raleigh, NC on October 18, 2011 to take part in a Stay Active clinic presented by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina at the Boys and Girls Club of Raleigh.

The event was an extension of the NBA FIT program that promotes healthy, active lifestyles for children through a six-week program at Boys and Girls Club locations throughout the Carolinas.

There were five different stations set up for the 50 kids selected to take part in this event. The themes for the five stations were cardio, agility, teamwork, dancing, and basketball.

As the children rotated through the stations, they participated in different drills such as jumping jacks, push-ups, relay races, layups, and dance routines. The Lady Cats took questions and spoke to the children about important points, such as eating the right foods and how to exercise properly. The kids seemed to have a great time being active with Rufus, the Lady Cats, and the Cats crew members.

"Events like this are really great for BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina," said Bynum Merritt, Market Business Consultant for BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina. "It allows us to get out into the community with our message of living a healthy lifestyle, and that means eating right and getting a lot of exercise.

"I think this event went very well today. We had a lot of enthusiasm from the kids and they were sitting on pins and needles just waiting for everyone to show up."

And when Rufus, the Lady Cats, and the Cats Crew members did show up, it was to a standing ovation from a raucous crowd of kids ready to exercise and be active.

"At the Boys and Girls Club of Raleigh we really try to focus on creating a full experience for our club members, including the academic side, the physical side, and having a healthy mind and body," said Nick Allen, Club Director for the Raleigh Boys and Girls Club. "BlueCross BlueShield and the Bobcats really came in and made it fun for the kids and created a great experience that they’ll remember as far as being physically fit.

"It was awesome. With the stations and rotations, we had a little bit for everybody. I think everybody had a great time and we will definitely be asking when the Charlotte Bobcats and BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina are coming back."

The Charlotte Bobcats would like to thank BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina and the Boys and Girls Club of Raleigh for letting us be part of such an exciting and productive event. The team looks forward to more of these events as they continue to promote living a healthy lifestyle among youth in the community.
