“We were clicking on all cylinders and jumped on them early and often,” May said. “We wanted to play a complete game from start to finish, and I think we did that today.”
Alan Anderson and Bernard Robinson each added 10 points for the Bobcats, while Matt Carroll, the league’s second-ranked scorer heading into the contest with 17.0 points, was held to nine points. Raymond Felton dished out a game-high six assists and added four points and four rebounds before leaving the contest in the third quarter after getting hit in the chest.
“This was a total team effort from an offensive and defensive standpoint,” said Bobcats assistant coach John-Blair Bickerstaff. “We got contributions from everyone today and it showed on the scoreboard. We are very pleased with the effort put forth today.”
Bobcats center Antonio Meeking also provided a spark off the bench for Charlotte in the first quarter, as he rattled off seven points and brought down four rebounds in the first 10 minutes of play. May had a big opening period, as well, contributing seven points inside in the game’s first five minutes. Charlotte’s two rookies out of North Carolina then took control of the game in the second quarter and helped build a 41-36 lead for the Bobcats at the break. May finished the first half with 14 points, while Felton tallied four points while chalking up five assists.
But it was in the third quarter that the Bobcats took control of the game, as they outscored San Antonio, 21-13, and pushed the lead to 62-49. With Felton on the bench, May took over the contest for Charlotte, scoring nine points in the stanza on 4-of-6 shooting (66.7 percent). But it wasn’t just May that had the hot hand. Charlotte shot a sizzling 52.9 percent (9-17) as a team in the period and put the Spurs away.
San Antonio tried to keep things close in the fourth quarter, cutting the Bobcats lead to as little as 12 points midway through the period, but Charlotte pulled away late in the contest and outscored the Spurs 22-13 on their way to their third win in the Revue.
B.J. Elder and Josh Asserlin both led the Spurs with 10 apiece, as San Antonio (2-1) suffered its first defeat in Salt Lake City.
Charlotte returns to action at 4:00 p.m. (EST) on Thursday against Seattle. All teams in the Revue have a bye on Wednesday.
