Charlotte Bobcats guard Jason Richardson today was selected by the NBA as Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending March 30. The honor is Richardson’s second in four weeks, as he previously received the award for the week ending March 9. Earlier in his career, Richardson was named Western Conference Player of the Week for the week ending March 20, 2005, when he was a member of the Golden State Warriors. Denver’s Carmelo Anthony received the Western Conference Player of the Week award this week.
Richardson averaged 26.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocked shot during the week’s four games, leading the Bobcats to a 3-1 record that included a franchise-record-tying three-game road winning streak. Richardson’s second award of the season is the third for a Bobcats player this year, joining Gerald Wallace, who received the award for the week ending January 20. Richardson also joins Wallace as the only Bobcats player to win the award more than once.
Richardson led the Bobcats in scoring in three of the four games during the week, scoring at least 20 points and grabbing at least five rebounds in each game. He notched his third double-double of the season with 34 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday’s 108-95 win over the L.A. Lakers, in which he extended his franchise record of games with 30 or more points in a season to 13. Richardson also tallied 27 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in Friday’s 96-93 win at Seattle. His other games included a 26-point, five-rebound night in Tuesday’s loss to Utah and a 20-point, five-rebound outing in Saturday’s 93-85 win at Portland.
