Charlotte Players Represent USA in Basketball and Track

The Charlotte Junior Rollin' Bobcats JV team, NWBA national champions in 2008-09, will take on competition from Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville and Raleigh on Saturday and Sunday, November 13-14 at the Cabarrus County Boys & Girls Club while working their way back to the NWBA national finals tournament to be held in Denver, Colorado next April. The Prep tournament for athletes ages 7-19 includes teams from Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville and Raleigh.

Former Charlotte Jr. Rollin’ Bobcat players are now playing on scholarship on major college wheelchair basketball teams with current players soon to follow. Several are also representing the country in basketball and other sports. Current players include Caitlin McDermott who won a gold medal with the USA Women’s National Team this past summer at the IWBF World Championships in England and Jill Moore will join a USA developmental team. Moore and Sean Burns were on the USA team for the 2010 IWAS International Junior Games in the Czech Republic and Burns will represent the USA at the 2011 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships which will take place in Christchurch, New Zealand in January. Coach David Kiley is also head coach for USA National Women’s Team that won the World Championships and which will compete in the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Rufus Lynx, the NBA Bobcats team mascot will be at the tournament at from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Sunday. The Rollin’ Bobcats JV team plays at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Ms. Wheelchair USA 2011, Alexandra McArthur, from Davidson, NC will speak to the athletes at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association was founded in 1948, only one year after the NBA. The Rollin' Bobcats adult teams are two-time NWBA Division II National Champions (1996, 1998 as the Charlotte Wheelchair Hornets). The Jr. Prep team finished 3rd nationally in 2005-06 and 10th in 2008.

Tournament sponsors include the Charlotte Bobcats, Abilities Unlimited of the Carolinas, Turning Point Carolina, CMC NorthEast Medical Center, Ortho Carolina, Cabarrus Pediatrics, ABC Medical, Brixx Pizza, Carolina Logos, Morrison Motors and Document Technologies.
