May Has Successful Right Knee Surgery

Bobcats forward Sean May underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Thursday, January 19 to trim some damaged cartilage in his right knee.

The procedure was performed by Bobcats team physician Dr. Glenn Perry at Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital.

“We went in to investigate the source of Sean’s discomfort in his right knee after his first surgery and we cleaned out some of the cartilage that was affecting his knee’s ability to function normally,” Perry said. “With Sean’s strong work ethic and dedication to come back, I know he will rebound to enjoy a long and healthy NBA career.”

May averaged 17.3 minutes in 23 games for the Bobcats this season, including one start. He posted averages of 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 40.9 percent (70-171) from the field.

No timetable has been set for May's return.

"We are in a posture where we want Sean (to get healthy), and we kind of insisted that he get everything taken care of," Bobcats General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We want him to take his time. There will be no rush to him coming back -- he’s too important to our franchise. We’re behind him 100 percent. We will not force any issues. Whatever timetable the doctor puts him on is fine with us. There is no pressure coming from the organization for him to expedite things."

The 6-9 forward scored a career-high 18 points on November 12 at Miami and hauled down a career-high 10 rebounds on November 15 at Orlando. May also scored 15 points against the Magic to record his first and only double-double of the season. In all, he scored in double-digits in 10 games, including a stretch of five straight from November 11-18.

This is the second time that May has undergone surgery as a member of the Bobcats. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on September 13, 2005 to remove damaged cartilage in his right knee. The procedure was performed in Santa Monica, California, by Dr. Stephen Lombardo, with consultation from Bobcats team physician Dr. Glenn Perry.

May missed training camp and all but one of Charlotte’s preseason games in 2005, making his return to the court on October 26 against Indiana.

The Bobcats selected May with the 13th overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft. He made an immediate impact with Charlotte as he was named the Rocky Mountain Revue Most Valuable Player and to the All-Revue Team at the Bobcats summer league in Salt Lake City, Utah, after averaging 17.3 points and 9.2 rebounds in 25.5 minutes.

The former Tar Heel was voted MVP of the NCAA Final Four after scoring 26 points (10-11 from the field) and grabbing 10 rebounds against Illinois to help North Carolina claim the 2005 NCAA title. He averaged 15.8 points and 10.0 rebounds in his three-year career at North Carolina.
