After mini-camp I went to Los Angeles to work out, lift some weights and get prepared to compete in the Olympics. Workouts were two or three times a day and when I was lifting weights I went to this place called National Academy of Sports Medicine. It was like a mechanic shop, but for people. They made sure that everything was nice and oiled and fully functional and working properly. They really know their stuff.
I went to the ESPY Awards on July 14 and I’d never been to an awards show before. They gave me the red carpet treatment. It was an interesting experience to see the show live and how they taped it for the broadcast. Then I came down here to training camp and have been working hard.
We’re still in the rudimentary stages here. But it’s been fun. I know LeBron a little bit from our times playing together at the Jordan Camp. Some people wonder if it’s harder for me because all of the other guys here have already played in the league, but that’s not really the case. I may be the odd man out a little bit in that regard, but not too much.
I’m learning little tid-bits about the game from the other players and the coaching staff. One adjustment is how fast the game is at this level. Zipping back-and-forth down the court. It’s a different mindset and I find myself doing it because they are. Before I never thought about going that fast, but when the others are you have to to keep up. I’m hearing a lot of stories from the guys and just listening and picking things up.
Coach Brown is really cool, I like him a lot. He has helped me with some shooting and he has taken me aside and given me some advice. Whatever he sees fit, he lets me know.
A lot of guys are saying how hot it is down here, but I’m from Houston and this is nothing compared to there. I love the heat and humidity.
After Saturday’s game against Puerto Rico, we leave for Germany. I’ve never been to Germany so I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a huge experience.
