SALT LAKE CITY, July 23 -- The Charlotte Bobcats wrapped up play in the Rocky Mountain Revue with an 80-63 win over the host Utah Jazz on Friday night. The Bobcats finished the Revue with a 5-2 record and completed summer league play with a 10-2 mark after winning all five games in the Minnesota Summer League.
“We shot the ball well because we defended well in the beginning and that’s what we have to do,” said Jeff Capel, the team’s coach for the game. “I thought we did a very good job with our defensive intensity and that got us some easy baskets and some open looks, which we knocked down.”
Primoz Brezec paced the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds and frontcourtmate Melvin Ely returned after missing Thursday night’s game to post 19 points and seven rebounds.
“It was important that we didn’t take this last game for granted and we closed out with a win,” Ely said. “The bigs had to show up early and we did. Primoz and I took control and set the tone.”
Ely scored nine of the team’s first 12 points in helping the Bobcats to an early 12-6 lead. Charlotte scored six-straight points to break open a 14-9 score and the Bobcats had their biggest lead of the opening quarter when Keith Carter banked in a shot at the buzzer for a 25-11 advantage. Brezec also had nine points in the quarter as the Bobcats shot 11-15 (.733) from the field and held the Jazz to 4-18 (.222) from the field.
Charlotte then started the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 22-point advantage at 35-13 midway through the period and led by a score of 42-21 at the half. Brezec (14 pts) and Ely (11) outscored the Jazz by themselves in the first half with a combined 25 points on 10-15 shooting. The Bobcats held Utah to 23.5 percent shooting in the half and forced 12 Jazz turnovers leading to 19 points.
In the third quarter, the Bobcats continued to play tough defense and increased their advantage to 26 points at 60-34 late in the period.
Utah cut into the Bobcats lead in the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run fueled by Kueth Duany and Kirk Snyder that moved the Jazz to within 66-52. But the Bobcats fended off the comeback and the lead never dipped below 13 points.
Kieth Carter had his best game of the Revue with 15 points in 23 minutes off the bench for Charlotte. Olumide Oyedeji recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Charlotte played without Loren Woods (right thigh contusion) and Maurice Carter (mild concussion).
