SALT LAKE CITY, July 18 -- Primoz Brezec had 17 points and seven rebounds on Sunday night as the Charlotte Bobcats took control early in the game and cruised to an 85-63 win over Seattle to improve to 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Revue.
“If we’re solid defensively then the offense will come. It was a great team effort all the way around. We have to be aggressive defensively and we were tonight,” said Jeff Capel, the team’s coach for the game. “Primoz Brezec was a lot more comfortable and confident. He and Melvin Ely seemed to complement one another very well and that will create a lot of high-low advantages for us.”
Charlotte scored the game’s first eight points en route to a 13-4 lead and then went ahead by 16 points at 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Bobcats shot .500 from the field and held Seattle to .235 (4-17). Seven different Charlotte players scored in the period and the Bobcats committed only one turnover.
The Bobcats increased their advantage to 35-11 early in the second period and extended the lead to 45-16 midway through the period. Charlotte scored 18 points off 17 Seattle turnovers in the opening half and hit 14-17 (.824) from the foul line.
Seattle cut into Charlotte’s advantage in the third quarter, moving within 11 points before the Bobcats rebounded to claim a 65-48 lead entering the fourth period. The Sonics shot .500 from the field.
But in the fourth quarter the Bobcats reclaimed a lead as large as 26 points and were never threatened.
The Bobcats sported a balanced scoring attack with Jason Kapono (14) and Danny Johnson (13) joining Brezec in double digits. Olumide Oyedeji and Bernard Robinson each scored eight points. Omar Cook dished out a game-best seven assists.
Charlotte shot .485 from the field for the game and scored 33 points off 30 Seattle turnovers.
