Cool School Field Trip Set For October 26

The Charlotte Bobcats’ Cool School Field Trip event and Read To Achieve Celebration, presented by Harris Teeter, has attracted more than 14,000 kids representing 31 regional cities and 14 counties, who will be rewarded with attendance at the Bobcats preseason game against Miami on October 26 at Charlotte Coliseum. The event is solely for qualified students and tickets will not be sold to the public.

“This wonderful new event is geared for middle school students attending public and private schools in North and South Carolina, who exemplify positive performance in and out of the classroom,” said Bobcats President and Chief Operating Officer Ed Tapscott. “We are proud to partner with local schools and reward our up-and-coming leaders with this unique and exclusive opportunity.”

The Bobcats Cool School Field and Read To Achieve Celebration will be a distinctive educational experience geared to promote literacy, academic achievement and citizenship. Students selected to attend the October 26 preseason game must have demonstrated strong academic performance, commendable character and service through the first month of the school year. Teachers and administrators from the participating schools, selected their students, based on the criteria established for the event.

There are a total of 74 public and private middle and elementary schools in North and South Carolina registered to participate in the event, with 25 coming from Mecklenburg County schools. Other North Carolina counties represented include Alexander, Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell-Statesville, Lincoln, Rowan and Union counties. South Carolina schools include representatives from Chester, Lancaster, Spartanburg and York counties. In addition, there are four private schools registered to attend.

Presenting sponsor Harris Teeter, whose Together in Education program has generated more than over $5 million since the program started in 1998, has joined together to bring the Bobcats Cool School Field Trip event to life.

“Harris Teeter is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Cool School Field Trip,” said Harris Teeter President Fred Morganthall. “This unique educational event is the perfect platform to reinforce the Harris Teeter commitment to education through our existing program, Together in Education (TIE). Last year, schools earned over $1.1 million for much needed items that fall outside their budgets.”

Throughout the game, students will be asked to participate in interactive activities that will include curriculum-based character development sessions with a focus on literacy, problem solving events, competitions and teacher recognition. Students will also be treated to motivational messages from the Bobcats coaching staff and receive a workbook filled with educational packed applications and instructions that will offer fun and excitement throughout the game. Students will also receive a pen, t-shirt and lunch, along with their workbooks.

The Bobcats first-ever draft pick, Emeka Okafor has been selected as the Cool School Field Trip Event / Read To Achieve Celebration ambassador. A former CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year recipient maintained a 3.74 cumulative grade-point average at the University of Connecticut. He graduated in just three years and was named the 2004 Big East Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
