Reaction: Bickerstaff, Hart & Slay

On the first allowable day to sign free agents, the Bobcats signed point guard Jason Hart and forward Tamar Slay on July 14. The two signings mark the first-ever free agent signings in franchise history. Here is what the principals said on Wednesday:

GENERAL MANAGER & HEAD COACH BERNIE BICKERSTAFF

On acquiring free agent Tamar Slay:
“We were hoping Tamar would be put on the expansion list. My son and I had the opportunity to work him out when he was coming out of Marshall. So he was certainly one of the guys we really like in terms of his versatility.”

On acquiring free agent Jason Hart:
"We’re going to give the ball to Jason and see what he does. We sat and watched the playoffs and saw that San Antonio used Jason Hart, even though they had acquired Charlie Ward. Jason is the guy who played critical minutes for the Spurs. As I told Jason, we’re going to put the ball in his hands and let him play and have fun, and we’ll see where it goes.”

GUARD JASON HART
“I’m happy to be here. This is my first opportunity to play extended minutes, and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity. It’s been a lot of hard work and perseverance. I’ve been in the NBDL and overseas, but I never lost sight of my dream. I’m just excited about a chance to play and the opportunity the Bobcats have given me and I’m looking forward to taking full advantage of it.”

On passing on more lucrative offers:
“One thing I’ve learned in my three years in the NBA is that we all make good money. But the one thing that keeps you in the NBA is playing. Every guy sitting on the bench is making pretty good money, but the opportunity to play may not always be there. I want to be a player in the NBA, and not just watch from the bench my whole career.”

On his style of play:
“I think defensively I set the tone for my teammates. I think I can run the team, and I can get guys good shots. I think more importantly, I can set the tempo of the game and do whatever a point guard needs to do to get a victory.”

FORWARD TAMAR SLAY
“I’m just happy to be here. It’s a great opportunity for me and the rest of the guys. I’ve been in the NBA now for two years, but I’ve had to sit back, watch and learn some because I really haven’t had the opportunity to play before. Hopefully here I’ll get an opportunity to play. I’m playing for one of the best coaches in the league in Bernie Bickerstaff, so I’m just trying to make the most of this new situation I’ve been given.”

On his play in the summer league:
“Well, I think I showed some of the better parts of my game. I had a positive showing, although I will not say I played perfect. I think I could have played better, but I rebounded the ball, I made shots and played pretty good defense, and that’s all I really wanted to do. This is the place I wanted to play. I let coach know that, and I wanted to go out and prove that.”
