“We are thrilled to have someone of Matt’s ability and character represent our organization,” Tapscott said. “He has proven to be one of the top television announcers in the NBA and we know that the Charlotte community will enjoy watching and listening to Matt describe the action when we take the court in the fall.”
Devlin’s first official television duty for the team will be to host the Bobcats Expansion Selection Special on Tuesday, June 22. The telecast will begin at 7 p.m. on WJZY UPN46 and will be held live at Founders Hall in Center City Charlotte. This event will feature the announcement of the first players selected by the Bobcats for the expansion franchise.
Devlin joins the Bobcats following three seasons as the television play-by-play announcer for the Memphis Grizzlies, including this season’s first-ever playoff run for that franchise. In addition to his television duties, Devlin lent his support to a variety of community initiatives as a personality and spokesperson, including the NBA’s Read to Achieve literacy program.
“I am honored to be selected as the first television announcer in Bobcats history,” Devlin said. “I look forward to being a member of an organization that is quickly being recognized as a model franchise. My family and I are excited about becoming an active part of the Charlotte community. On a personal note, it’s great to work and live in basketball country and I can’t wait to call the action starting with opening night.”
No stranger to television, Devlin has also worked with the NBA and its national television partners, serving as a play-by-play announcer and sideline reporter for TNT’s coverage for two seasons. He also worked for NBATV when the league launched its network in October 1999 and served as the regular play-by-play voice for the network on its game broadcasts of the regular season, playoffs, summer leagues and the WNBA. Devlin has covered many events for the NBA, including the 2003 All-Star Weekend when he co-hosted several shows live from Atlanta.
This summer he will work for NBC broadcasting the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Devlin will handle the play-by-play duties for track and field and diving for the network’s high definition telecasts.
Prior to joining the Grizzlies, Devlin handled the play-by-play duties for the New York Liberty of the WNBA for the MSG Network, and also was the pre-game and post-game host for the network’s broadcasts of the New York Knicks and New York Yankees. For three-straight seasons Devlin was the host for the WNBA Draft on the event’s live broadcast on ESPN2.
In addition to his NBA and WNBA experience, Devlin also called college basketball games on ESPN, the Atlantic 10 basketball network and the MSG Network. Moreover, Devlin has announced games for the St. Louis Cardinals, the University of Connecticut Huskies, ESPN Regional, ESPN International and four minor league baseball teams.
Devlin is a 1990 graduate of Boston College and attended high school in Nashville, Tennessee. He and his wife, Erin, have three sons, Jack (4), Ian (2) and two-month old Luke.
