THE RESULT
Jeffery Taylor scored 24 points in the Bobcats opening game of the NBA Summer League on July 12, but Charlotte could not hang on in a 69-68 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Las Vegas.
TURNING POINTS
Charlotte trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter but was able to rally in the fourth quarter, cutting San Antonio's lead to 67-65 with 24 seconds left. Instead of fouling, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was able to steal the ball from Aron Baynes after the Spurs inbound pass, giving the Cats the ball with 15 ticks on the clock. Charlotte followed by taking its first lead of the second half on Jeffery Taylor's 3-pointer from the left side with 10 seconds remaining. The Spurs countered with a Cory Joseph jumper with four seconds left, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's desperation trey was off the mark as San Antonio escaped with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
If the Bobcats are going to get on a winning streak in Las Vegas they'll need to find contributions from someone other than second-year players Jeffery Taylor and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Taylor poured in 24 points and Kidd-Gilchrist added 12 as they combined for 53 percent of the Bobcats offense, with no other Cat scoring in double figures... Both teams shot well from the field, with Charlotte holding a 42.4 percent (28-for-66) to 41.9 percent (26-for-62) advantage. The Bobcats struggled from the line however, hitting on just 44.4 percent (8-for-18) of their freebies to the Spurs 76.5 percent (13-for-17)... The Cats inside presence was evident on the glass, where they outrebounded San Antonio, 31-25. Charlotte also blocked three shots to the Spurs one.
BOBCATS PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Jeffery Taylor came out strong in the first quarter, scoring 11 points to keep the Cats close. He finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field and nearly gave Charlotte the win on his 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist provided support for Taylor and the Cats with 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
SPURS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Cory Joseph scored a team-high 19 points to go with five rebounds and five assists and hit the game-winning shot for San Antonio.
GAME NOTES
Cody Zeller made his Bobcats debut and finished with eight points on 4-for-9 shooting while hauling down five rebounds, dishing out two assists and blocking one shot... Bismack Biyombo was the only player on either team to record double-digit rebounds in the contest, grabbing 11 boards... Point guard Jerome Dyson led the Cats reserves with eight points and three assists.
