(Morrison) It’s great to be here in Charlotte. It’s obviously a basketball city and it’s great they came out and supported Bobcats and I’m glad to be here with that type of reaction.
(Devlin) Bernie Bickerstaff and Michael Jordan, the first thing that came out of their mouths when they talk about Adam Morrison, is your competitive drive.
(Morrison) I think it was just how I was raised. My parents were very competitive in the household and I was always playing sports as a little kid, so I think it was just a part of me I guess.
(Devlin) Your father John was a college basketball coach and also played professionally overseas, what did he teach you about the game of basketball?
(Morrison) Just to play it the right way. He’s my first coach and he’s the coach I always go back to when I need help and he knows my game inside and out. So it’s nice to have a father who knows the sport I’ll be playing professionally.
(Devlin) You had that opportunity to embrace him after you heard David Stern say Adam Morrison is going to Charlotte.
(Morrison) He just said you made it. You know he had a big grin on his face, it was awesome -- it was fun.
(Devlin) You shared this dream, how much have you talked about going to the NBA?
(Morrison) We talked about it a lot. A little bit last year before the season started and it’s finally coming full circle -- I’m just happy to be here.
(Devlin) When was the first time you said, you know what this is a league I can play in?
(Morrison) I think a little bit my freshman and sophomore year, you know I had some good games against some good opponents and some guys who were projected to be NBA players and that’s when I started to realized I could play at this level.
(Devlin) What did Mark Few, the head coach of Gonzaga teach you about the game?
(Morrison) I think he just did a good job of expanding my game and making sure it’s more well-rounded. And when I came out of high school (Smokehan) I was just kind of putting the ball on the floor and making a tough shot every time. I didn’t really have too much else to my game, so I think he did a good job of expanding it as much as he could.
(Devlin) What part of your game do you like and what part of your game do you want to expand?
(Morrison) Obviously, I love to score and I love to do that part of it -- that’s my favorite part of the game, but I want to expand all of the other areas -- ball handling and both ends of the floor.
(Devlin) Obviously you can score, you led the nation in scoring, was that an objective of yours at the start of the season or did you realize for our team, Gonzaga, a team that’s gone to the NCAA tournament, I need to do this to get where I want to go?
(Morrison) It wasn’t an objective of mine at the start of the season. I had a slow start at the first game and only had 15 points, then we went to the Maui, and we had a pretty good tournament and I realized for us to win, not to knock on the guys there, we had a great team, I had to step up my game on the offensive end. So people made a big deal about the scoring race, but it was more trying to win the game more than anything. And if that meant me scoring 40 then it was going to have to happen.
(Devlin) Adam you’re such a low-key guy off of the court, what happens to you inside as soon as you step onto the floor, because obviously with the emotions and passions that you play with, you’re completely opposite.
(Morrison) Yeah, that’s how I’ve always played and that’s my workplace I guess, so that’s where I like to show my emotion. That’s what I care about a lot, so that’s how it all comes out.
(Devlin) What’s interesting when you look inside of your game, when the big games are on your schedule you really rose to the occasion -- Michigan State 43, the NCAA tournament -- you can almost pinpoint every single game last year. When you see that sort of level of talent that you have to go against what does that do for you internally to say we need it?
(Morrison) I always felt that I played my best basketball against the best talent, so I had those games circled on my calendar on the season calendar. So I just get pumped up for big games. I like the spotlight as far as basketball goes, and it just gets me going -- I like to play against the best.
(Devlin) Tell me about your workout schedule, it was certainly hectic. I read where you said you didn’t necessarily think your Bobcats’ workout was great, but Bernie Bickerstaff thought it was phenomenal, why?
(Morrison) Well, I’m really hard on myself. I’m my biggest critic. I missed some shots, so I probably thought I didn’t do a good job. But I felt comfortable here ever since I came in for the first workout, so it was good.
(Devlin) Where else did you workout where you said everything clicked?
(Morrison) Toronto, Chicago and Portland -- I had some good workouts there. But I came out of this workout, and this is the honest truth, I was like I feel really comfortable here and liked how the staff treated me. So when my name was finally called, it was very exciting because I always feel good around here.
(Devlin) Why do you feel comfort around here -- the size of the city, the environment?
(Morrison) A lot of both -- the size, I like what the organization is trying to do around here and trying to build the organization up. And they have a good fan base -- it’s a basketball state and obviously a basketball city. And I think teamwise I fit it right away, so it’s going to be good.
(Devlin) How familiar are you with Raymond Felton, Sean May, and Emeka Okafor?
(Morrison) Very familiar. I was fans of them in college, I’ve seen them both win championships, and so I think that’s another positive about this organization -- they have proven winners at the college level, so hopefully I can fit in right away.
(Devlin) Alright you wore the number three in college, but you change to 35. Gerald Wallace wears number three for the Bobcats -- 35 the significance of that?
(Morrison) It’s my high school number. That’s where I started being noticed so I went back to 35.
(Devlin) You feel comfortable at 35 -- some guys are like hey I have to have my number?
(Morrison) No, to me it’s just a number on a jersey, it really doesn’t matter.

(Devlin) Now everyone knows that you have Type 1 Diabetes. This was discovered your eighth grade year when you lost thirty pounds. How has that changed your life?
(Morrison) I use it as a positive. It’s made me more disciplined and made me appreciate athletics more and you know the simple pleasures of life. And like I said, I use it as a positive to stay disciplined to make sure I’m doing the right thing so I can continue my athletic career.
(Devlin) There have been other athletes that have obviously have had this, Chris Dudley being one of them, and he spent 15 years in the NBA. Have you conversed at all with him about how to handle it and the NBA schedule?
(Morrison) Yeah we have. He gave me some good pointers on the travel and how to handle the tough schedule, but he said the biggest thing is just to keep doing what you are doing and to make sure you take care of yourself and it shouldn’t be a big issue. You know he did the same thing and I plan on doing the same thing.
(Devlin) Do you think it has been blown out of proportion or do you not mind the attention because it allows younger kids that also have diabetes to look up to someone?
(Morrison) I think coming to this next step it was blown out of proportion a little bit. People were wondering how I could handle it, and I was just thinking in my head, I played 38 minutes a game and lead the nation in scoring, so I was doing the right thing at the college level. But like you said, it is good to raise awareness because this is a disease that is very rampant in America. Kids are starting to get it at a younger age, so it would be great to help raise awareness any way I can and eventually start some foundations and raise some money.
(Devlin) We see already that you have put yourself in front of the camera with EA sports, what was that whole experience like shooting commercials for you?
(Morrison) Well it was definitely a long day, but it was fun. I’m a very big video game fan, so when EA came to me about doing a spot I was very excited, especially about NBA Live. It was pretty cool.
(Devlin) Now outside of basketball, what do you enjoy doing? I heard you actually enjoy fishing a lot.
(Morrison) Yeah I do some fishing, there are a lot of lakes and stuff in the Northwest and from what I’ve heard there are two close ones here, so I’m sure I will do some fishing. But for the most part I’m a hermit, I guess you could say, I stay home a lot, I go to the gym and back.
(Devlin) Everyone says you are a gym rat. What does the mean to you -- actually how much time are you spending in the gym on a daily basis? How many shots are you putting up?
(Morrison) I like to spend at least two or three hours a day, and especially now it’s my job, so I’m held accountable with making sure I’m producing, so I’m going to be in the gym a lot. I’m looking forward to it and to put on a Bobcats uniform, an NBA uniform, it’s just going to be a dream come true.
