With Charlotte’s 2008 Training Camp on the horizon, the players can’t wait to get things going as the franchise enters its fifth season, and first under new Head Coach Larry Brown. Over the course of the summer, the Bobcats commitment to improving has been evident at Time Warner Cable Arena, with all 14 players under contract having been seen in the weight room and out on the practice court getting a workout in. Through it all, bobcats.com has been there catching up with the players as they prepare to head to Wilmington, NC, on September 29 for training camp.
Here is what Sean May had to say about how his rehab has been progressing this summer and how he’s feeling heading into camp.

bobcats.com: You’re looking good and must be feeling good, so kind of take us through how you’re feeling right now.
May: I’m just ready to start the season. We’ve got the contract out of the way and the season is around the corner. I’m just trying to get ready and make this run.

bobcats.com: Take us through what you’ve been up to since then and where you’ve been working out.
May: I feel great. It’s been a long, hard summer. I’ve been in Chapel Hill working out and trying to get ready for the season. The knee feels good, the body feels good and mentally I’m ready, so I’m up for the challenge of trying to make it though 82 games healthy with some wins.

bobcats.com: Tell us about the process that you’ve gone through this offseason.
May: Right after the season, I went and saw the doctors and they informed me that my microfracture is healed. The only thing I was waiting on was a bone bruise that actually made me wait an extra two months before I got back on the court, which is good because it allowed me to get my body back in shape. Now that I’m back playing, my body feels good, I’m able to take hits, my knee feels good – so I’ve just been doing that. I was also back in school at Chapel Hill and trying to finish that up. I’m just trying to stay in shape the best way possible.

bobcats.com: We all know how excited you are to get back on the court, but is one of the important things not to rush things too quickly?
May: Definitely. That was my thought process coming in today. I had played four-straight days and played pretty well, so when I came in today and saw the guys were working out, I decided to back it off today and allow three days of recovery so I can come back Monday and hit it hard again and try to push myself a little bit harder. It’s trial-and-error. You have to go hard, but you can’t go too hard. The one thing that has been fortunate for me is that ever since I’ve had the surgery, I haven’t had any setbacks. They postponed allowing me to play for two months just due to the fact that they wanted the bone bruise to completely go away. That’s the only minor setback that I’ve had. That’s the thought process – I don’t want any setbacks. I want to be able to go through this season, get through training camp, play well and get through the season without having to miss any games.

bobcats.com: Coming in and seeing the guys working out while you’ve been rehabbing has had to get your motor going a little bit more when you see the kind of commitment your teammates have this offseason, doesn’t it?
May: There’s no question. I was talking to my father the other day, and I told him that I never thought you’d find 14 pros working out in September anywhere. I can’t believe that many guys are here. To have your captains – J-Rich (Jason Richardson), Gerald (Wallace) and Ray (Felton) – those guys have been here this summer working out hard. Matt Carroll’s been here all summer, partly due to the fact his wife just had a baby, but he’s been here all summer. Adam’s been here, too. That’s good when you have all those guys here to develop more camaraderie and be able to get on the court together. That does nothing but help.

bobcats.com: This is a group that’s been together for a little while now, and it seems like the expectations have really been raised. With you coming back, you’re obviously a big part of those expectations rising up. What are your expectations for this season?
May: My expectation is just to go out and play every night. I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to play again. So many guys have had the surgery that I did and not been so fortunate. Then, just to try to help my team win games. Whatever coach asks of me – whatever role he gives me and defines for me, I’ll gladly accept that and just help my team out. For this team, we’ve straddled that line. We’re getting close to being good – really good – and we’ve got to make that next step. We’ve made every excuse in the book, and now it’s just time to get the job done. We’ve got the coaches, we’ve got the players and we’ve got the training staff. Now it’s just trying to do it.

bobcats.com: Part of taking that next step was brining in new Head Coach Larry Brown. Tell us how excited you are to have him in here.
May: I love Coach Brown – I always have and always been a huge fan. To have him here is great, not only because he played at Carolina and coached there, but because he is just a great guy. We have some ties too. Mike Woodson, who coached for him, is my godfather, so I’ve always been around him and have seen him coach plenty of times. To have him here with the background he has and that Hall-of-Fame knowledge can only help, and I’m glad to get some tutelage under him.

bobcats.com: All the pieces seem to be coming together for you, but now is the biggest challenge mentally – being able to step back on the court and get after it?
May: Yeah. A lot of people say the last step is mentally being ready and being able to go out there and trust it after coming off a major injury. Adam and I have talked about it. I’m not that far. I’m not that far from where I want to be. I’m actually happy where I am going into camp. Right now, I’ve played, taken some hits and had some scares, but I’ve been able to stand up and continue to play. Mentally, I’m close. Right now I’d say I’m probably 85-90 percent, and going into camp I couldn’t be happier.

lofd91:
great interview.good luck in the upcoming season for sean and the rest of the bobcat team.

tbest:
I think the article was brief but good. I feel that sean may is not only a intelligent player but a talented player as far as the post, his passing is a very Underrated, and he can step out and hit a midrange shot as well. If he's healthy with the core group of guys they have, i think the will do well under Larry brown because he's not only a teacher but a motivator of the game of basketball. He will do well with the team that he has because all the guys want to learn and want to win on this team.

WICKED1:
IM SO HAPPY THAT MR.MAY WILL B COMEN BACK B/C HE IS A GOOD PLAYER AND TEAMS WILL GET 2 KNOW THAT REAL SOON..
