Three More In For Saturday Afternoon Workout

June 9, 2007

Charlotte's preparation for the 2007 NBA Draft continued Saturday during afternoon workouts at the Presbyterian Hospital Training Center at Charlotte Bobcats Arena with Winthrop's Craig Bradshaw, Creighton's Anthony Tolliver and Virginia State's Avis Wyatt all in town to showcase their talents.

Bradshaw led Winthrop in rebounding (6.3) and ranked third in scoring (13.5) in 2006-07, while helping lead the Eagles to a Big South Championship and a 74-64 win over sixth-seeded Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The 6-10, 240-pound center averaged 9.2 points and 4.7 rebound in his four years at Winthrop. A native of Lower Hutt, New Zealand, Bradshaw played for the 2006 New Zealand National Team during the summer World Championships and also represented New Zealand in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.

Tolliver ranked second on Creighton with 13.4 points and led the Bluejays in rebounding (6.7) and blocked shots (1.8) on his way to a First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. The 6-9, 245-pound center recently shined at the Portsmith Invitational, averaging 12.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocked shots while leading his Holiday Inn-Portsmouth team to a 3-0 record and the event title. Tolliver was also one of 12 players at the camp named to the All-Tournament Team. He is also the two-time winner of the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Wyatt led Virginia State with averages of 17.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.11 blocks in 2006-07 while leading the Trojans to a 20-8 overall record. At 6-11, 220 pounds, Wyatt is a versatile player who could spend time at both forward positions.

Bobcats Head Coach Sam Vincent and Bradshaw spoke with the media after the workouts:

BOBCATS HEAD COACH SAM VINCENT
(On his thoughts of the afternoon session)

The afternoon session was good. The thing that is exciting for us is that all of these guys are coming in with a lot of energy and working very hard, but of course we are watching to see if they can follow the drills that we are putting them through, because it’s all new for them. There is some nervousness and tension, but so far the guys have done an excellent job at following through with what we want to see. I thought Bradshaw did a good job. He did what he does, he’s a shooter. He shot the ball well, got through the drills well, he’s a guy that I like because he is so fundamentally sound.

(On if anybody stood out to him in today’s workouts)
I liked the kid Jermareo (Davidson) from the earlier workout. A big part of what we’re looking for is a big, athletic guy that can come in and have some post presence and give us some inside scoring. So we’re trying to be specific with our needs. We want to go into the draft and focus on what we need and try not to get sidetracked by all the incredibly talented players. Davidson is a 6-10 kid with long arms, an athletic body, a nice touch around the basket, soft hands, and I thought he did a good job this morning.

(On Bradshaw being a possibility for the summer league team)
I need to get with the summer league crew and the scouts and figure out who the guys are that have been invited. He is a guy that would be interesting. He had a great tournament, he’s a big guy that shoots the ball very well, he can extend the floor and create shot opportunities from the outside. But you have to have a low post threat to be able to create the opportunities from the outside. He’s a guy that’s on our radar, we like him, he had a great workout, and he’s somebody we’ll keep an eye on.

(On the possibility of drafting an international player who might not play this season)
We’re going to have a variety of guys that are going to have opinions about this draft. We’ve got a scouting department that watches these guys all year long. We have basketball operations, which is the coaching staff, that is going to be watching these workouts and going through a bunch of information. We’ve got our international scouts, and we’ve got our executive bodies, which are Michael (Jordan), Rod (Higgins) and Bernie (Bickerstaff) and those guys, and I think collectively we’ve got to sit and agree on what our specific needs are and how we can make this team better. I don’t think, speaking on my behalf, finding a guy that we’re going to leave in Europe or somewhere else is going to help this team next year. We need players from picks eight and 22 that can be solid contributors to this team.

(On today’s workout)

It was a tough workout. It was my first one. It was good to get this one of the way and I know what to expect now.

(Was it what you expected?)
It was a little tougher than what I expected. There were no breaks and it was very intense.

(On what he knows about the Bobcats)
I would love to play for any team, but Charlotte would be a great team to play for. I know the area and I have friends around here, so it would be nice to play here.

(On Charlotte feeling like home)
I’ve been training in Atlanta for the last month or so. Coming back here to work out for Charlotte feels like I’m coming home.

(On how his game translates to the NBA game)
I believe I can shoot and run the floor pretty well. I just hope they can see that.

(On if he believes the Bobcats would be a good fit for him)
I believe so. I believe they have seen me play over the last four years at Winthrop. I just hope I can keep on getting better and they can see something good in me.
