Judging by Bobcats fans reaction to the drafting of Adam Morrison with the third pick in the 2006 NBA Draft at the Bobcats Draft Party, Charlotte couldn’t have done any better when it came to selecting its newest Bobcats player.
Before NBA commissioner David Stern read off Morrison’s name, you could feel the anticipation and excitement that filled Charlotte Bobcats Arena, and once Morrison’s name was read off, the arena exploded in approval.
“I think it’s a great pick,” Bobcats fan Matthew McDurment said. “You know some people make fun of him for crying when they got eliminated from the tournament, but I think we can use that type of passion in Charlotte.”
“I think we made a good choice,” added fellow fan Rob White. “Adam Morrison is the best player coming out this year, so I’m happy with it. I loved the event, as well!”
Numerous fans waited outside long before the doors opened at 6:30 p.m. for the annual Bobcats Draft Party and were able to enjoy the atmosphere and games for children at the Party at the Plaza. Fans enjoyed a live rock band, a bike stunt show and a rock-climbing wall for kids.
“I am very excited to be here,” fan Daniel McDee said. “This is my first time coming out to the arena. I like being out at Party on the Plaza. The atmosphere is nice and I could get used to this.”
“I’m more than excited…I’m ecstatic,” commented fan Nathan Bates. “I want to see everything they have put together for entertainment. They have built this place to have a lot of entertainment opportunities and this has been big for the city, so I’m always excited to come out here and see what’s going on.”
Once Fans were able to enter the arena, they had opportunities to participate in drawings, sign posters for the draft picks, buy authentic warmup attire the Bobcats wore this past season (with all proceeds going to the Bobcats Charitable Foundation) and receive autographs from Kevin Burleson and the Lady Cats dance team.
Fans also had the opportunity to buy season tickets and received 25 percent off all of their purchases at The Team Store.
“I really enjoyed the Lady Cats and the Kings Bike Stunt show,” comments Jason. “I wasn’t expecting anything at all, so this was a nice surprise. I’m very impressed.”
And no Draft Party could be complete without free prizes. Fans had the opportunity to win season tickets in the Bud Light free throw contest, win a Mercedes Benz and catch T-shirts from the Bobcats’ Rally Cats.
Without question, the event exceeded the expectations of most Bobcats fans.
“I’m always excited about the Bobcats,” exclaims William Derk. “I like the entire celebration. I like the decorations and the atmosphere. I just like going in this place. I love the Charlotte Bobcats!!!”
