Prep Rollin’ Bobcats Finish Third In The Nation

The Charlotte Rollin' Bobcats Prep team entered the 2006 National Wheelchair Basketball Association's Prep Division National Tournament seeded 5th after completing a 16-2 regular season schedule, which included an undefeated record in their Southern Conference. Their two losses came on an "extra" road-trip to Baltimore, MD in February to the #1 ranked New Jersey Nets.

The Rollin' Bobcats arrived at the National Tournament with a bit of a chip on their shoulders, being seeded behind the New Jersey Nets, Michigan Thunderbirds, Sterling Heights Challengers (Detroit), and Milwaukee Wheelin' Wizards left the Bobcats wondering if the rest of the nation respected their team's concept of relentless defensive pressure and unselfish offensive play. Charlotte started the tournament's "pool competition" with strong wins over the 4th-seeded Wheelin Wizards and the 9th-seeded Grand Rapids (Michigan) Junior Pacers to finish Friday's competition 2-0 and entered the Bobcats into the Nation's Elite Eight.

Saturday morning began with another strong performance and win over the Courage Rolling Rowdies (Minneapolis, MN) setting up a Final Four showdown and rematch with the top-seeded, undefeated and defending national champion New Jersey Nets. This semifinal game was the most anticipated and most watched game of the tournament. The upstart Bobcats were an immediate hit with the multi-state audience and chants of D-FENSE soon echoed throughout the RiverPlex Center, the Bobcats jumped out to a quick start and their tenacious defense gave warning that New Jersey's title run was in jeopardy.

The fierce defensive pressure by Caitlin McDermott and Jill Moore left New Jersey's one-man offensive juggernaut, Dylan Levine (2005 & 2006 MVP), frustrated. Charlotte's leading scorer and rebounder, Roody Withers, continued to turn passes from Sean Burns and Jacob Tyree into two-point conversions with his soft left-handed shots from around the key. After trailing by six points with a minute remaining in the game, the Bobcats could only close to within two points before the final buzzer. The Rollin' Bobcats had served notice to those in attendance that their team play, energy and enthusiasm was unmatched. The final score was New Jersey 30, Charlotte 28.

The following morning, the youngest Bobcats beat the #2 ranked Michigan Thunderbirds to finish the National Tournament ranked #3 in the nation. Roody Withers was named to the All-Tournament First Team and Jill Moore was named to the All-Tournament Second Team. This tournament concluded the 2005-06 season for the Rollin' Bobcats with a 19-3 record with all three losses coming to the two-time National Champion New Jersey Nets.
