Bobcats Make Special Assist
Donation Enables Local Special Olympics Hoops Team to Compete at National Games

July 15, 2010 – Bobcats Sports & Entertainment (BSE) President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield announced today the donation of $8,000 to Special Olympics North Carolina, enabling the Mecklenburg County Patriots basketball team to travel and play in the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska later this month. The basketball team will be among the 50 athletes and 15 coaches representing North Carolina at the National Games, which features more than 3,000 athletes from around the country competing in 13 sports.t.

"The courage and determination these athletes display are an inspiration to everyone associated with them," said Whitfield. "It is truly an honor to support their trip to the National Games, and the entire Bobcats Sports & Entertainment family stands behind them as they compete for a championship."

The Mecklenburg County Patriots roster includes players ranging in age from 19 to 45. Over the past 12 years the Patriots have won 6 gold medals in Special Olympics North Carolina competition, and will face the best teams from across the country during the National Games. The team’s final practice before heading to Nebraska was held this evening at Time Warner Cable Arena’s Presbyterian Training Center, the official practice site of the Charlotte Bobcats, with Bobcats assistant coaches Dave Hanners and LaSalle Thompson. The Patriots will travel July 17 and begin competition on July 18.

Bobcats Sports & Entertainment operates the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Time Warner Cable Arena, located in the heart of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The Bobcats just completed their sixth season of play in the NBA with the franchise’s first playoff appearance.
